This is a record of the genealogies of Aaron and Moses current as of the day on which the LORD addressed Moses on Mount Sinai. 1These are the family records of Aaron and Moses at the time the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.
The sons of Aaron were Nadab the first-born, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar 2These are the names of Aaron's sons: Nadab, the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
who were anointed priests and whom he consecrated as priests. 3These are the names of Aaron's sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests.
Nadab and Abihu died in the LORD's presence when they offered unauthorized fire before him in the Sinai wilderness. Since they didn't have their own children, Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priest under the authority of Aaron their father.4But Nadab and Abihu died in the LORD's presence when they presented unauthorized fire before the LORD in the Wilderness of Sinai, and they had no sons. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests under the direction of Aaron their father.
The LORD told Moses, 5The LORD spoke to Moses:
"Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them to Aaron the priest so they may serve him. 6"Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them to the priest Aaron to assist him.
They are to take care of his needs and the needs of the whole congregation at the Tent of Meeting by performing duties at the tent. 7They are to perform duties for him and the entire community before the tent of meeting by attending to the service of the tabernacle.
They are to take charge of the utensils at the Tent of Meeting and meet the needs of the Israelis by performing duties on behalf of the tent. 8They are to take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting and perform duties for the Israelites by attending to the service of the tabernacle.
Assign the descendants of Levi to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelis. 9Assign the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they have been assigned exclusively to him from the Israelites.
Appoint Aaron and his sons so that they are to take responsibility for their priesthood. Any unauthorized person who approaches it is to be put to death."10You are to appoint Aaron and his sons to carry out their priestly responsibilities, but any unauthorized person who comes near the sanctuary is to be put to death."
Later, the LORD told Moses, 11The LORD spoke to Moses:
"I'm taking the descendants of Levi for myself from among the Israelis in place of every first-born who opens the womb. The descendants of Levi belong to me 12"See, I have taken the Levites from the Israelites in place of every firstborn Israelite from the womb. The Levites belong to me,
because all the first-born belong to me. When I destroyed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated all the first-born in Israel for myself—from human beings to livestock. They belong to me, since I am the LORD."13because every firstborn belongs to me. At the time I struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated every firstborn in Israel to myself, both man and animal. They are mine; I am the LORD."
The LORD also told Moses in the Sinai wilderness, 14The LORD spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai:
"Number the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral houses and tribes, numbering every male from a month old and above."15"Register the Levites by their ancestral families and their clans. You are to register every male one month old or more."
So Moses numbered them according to the instruction of the LORD, as he had been commanded. 16So Moses registered them in obedience to the LORD as he had been commanded:
These are Levi's descendants by name: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 17These were Levi's sons by name: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
These are names of Gershon's descendants according to their families: Libni and Shimei. 18These were the names of Gershon's sons by their clans: Libni and Shimei.
These are the names of Kohath's descendants according to their families: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. 19Kohath's sons by their clans were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.
Merari's descendants according to their families were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral house.20Merari's sons by their clans were Mahli and Mushi. These were the Levite clans by their ancestral families.
The families of Libni and Shimei were descendants of Gershon. As families of the descendants of Gershon, 21The Libnite clan and the Shimeite clan came from Gershon; these were the Gershonite clans.
all the males a month old and above numbered 7,500. 22Those registered, counting every male one month old or more, numbered 7,500.
The families of the descendants of Gershon encamped behind the tent toward the west.23The Gershonite clans camped behind the tabernacle on the west side,
The leader of the tribe and family of Gershon was Lael's son Eliasaph. 24and the leader of the Gershonite families was Eliasaph son of Lael.
The duties of the descendants of Gershon at the Tent of Meeting pertained to the tent, the tent covering, the curtain to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, 25The Gershonites' duties at the tent of meeting involved the tabernacle, the tent, its covering, the screen for the entrance to the tent of meeting,
the hangings at the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance of the courtyard that surrounded the tent, the altar, and all of the tent cords in use.26the hangings of the courtyard, the screen for the entrance to the courtyard that surrounds the tabernacle and the altar, and the tent ropes--all the work relating to these.
The families of Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel were descendants of Kohath. As families of the descendants of Kohath, 27The Amramite clan, the Izharite clan, the Hebronite clan, and the Uzzielite clan came from Kohath; these were the Kohathites.
all the males a month old and above numbered 8,600. They were tasked to the care of the sanctuary. 28Counting every male one month old or more, there were 8,600 responsible for the duties of the sanctuary.
The descendants of Kohath encamped beside the tent toward the south. 29The clans of the Kohathites camped on the south side of the tabernacle,
The leader of the tribe and family of Kohath was Uzziel's son Elizaphan. 30and the leader of the families of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan son of Uzziel.
Their duties pertained to the ark, the table, the lamp stand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary with which they ministered, and all the curtains in use. 31Their duties involved the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the sanctuary utensils that were used with these, and the screen--and all the work relating to them.
The chief of all the leaders of the descendants of Levi was Aaron the priest's son Eleazar. He was assigned to oversee those who were in charge of the services of the sanctuary.32The chief of the Levite leaders was Eleazar son of Aaron the priest; he had oversight of those responsible for the duties of the sanctuary.
The families of Mahli and Mushi were descendants of Merari. As families of Merari, 33The Mahlite clan and the Mushite clan came from Merari; these were the Merarite clans.
all the males a month old and above numbered 6,200. 34Those registered, counting every male one month old or more, numbered 6,200.
The leader of the tribe and family of Merari was Abihail's son Zuriel. The descendants of Merari encamped beside the tent toward the north. 35The leader of the families of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail; they camped on the north side of the tabernacle.
The duties of the caretakers from the descendants of Merari included the boards of the tent, its bars, crossbars, sockets, all its utensils for their services, 36The assigned duties of Merari's descendants involved the tabernacle's supports, crossbars, pillars, bases, all its equipment, and all the work related to these,
the pillars around the courtyard, their sockets, pegs, and tent cords.37in addition to the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, and ropes.
In front of the tent and east of the Tent of Meeting, Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons encamped facing the east. They were tasked to perform the duties of the sanctuary and care for the needs of the Israelis. Any unauthorized person who approached was to be executed. 38Moses, Aaron, and his sons, who performed the duties of the sanctuary as a service on behalf of the Israelites, camped in front of the tabernacle on the east, in front of the tent of meeting toward the sunrise. Any unauthorized person who came near it was to be put to death.
As the LORD had instructed, everyone counted by Moses and Aaron from the descendants of Levi, according to their tribe, all males from a month old and above numbered 22,000.39The total number of all the Levite males one month old or more that Moses and Aaron registered by their clans at the LORD's command was 22,000.
Later the LORD instructed Moses: "Number all the first-born males of Israel from a month old and above and list their names. 40The LORD told Moses: "Register every firstborn male of the Israelites one month old or more, and list their names.
Separate the descendants of Levi for me—since I am the LORD—in place of all the first-born sons of Israel. Also separate the livestock of the descendants of Levi in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of Israel." 41You are to take the Levites for me--I am the LORD--in place of every firstborn among the Israelites, and the Levites' cattle in place of every firstborn among the Israelites' cattle."
So Moses numbered all the firstborn from the sons of Israel just as the LORD commanded him. 42So Moses registered every firstborn among the Israelites, as the LORD commanded him.
All the first-born males according to the list of their names from a month old and above numbered 22,273.43The total number of the firstborn males one month old or more listed by name was 22,273.
Then the LORD told Moses, 44The LORD spoke to Moses again:
"Separate the descendants of Levi in place of all the firstborn sons of Israel and the livestock of the descendants of Levi in place of their livestock. The descendants of Levi belong to me, since I am the LORD. 45"Take the Levites in place of every firstborn among the Israelites, and the Levites' cattle in place of their cattle. The Levites belong to me; I am the LORD.
You are to pay a ransom for the 273 first-born Israelis who exceed the census number of the descendants of Levi, 46As the redemption price for the 273 firstborn Israelites who outnumber the Levites,
so collect five shekels for each individual, denominated in shekels of the sanctuary, that is, the shekel that weighs 20 gerahs.47collect five shekels for each person, according to the standard sanctuary shekel--twenty gerahs to the shekel.
Then give the money meant for ransom of their excess to Aaron and his sons."48Give the silver to Aaron and his sons as the redemption price for those who are in excess among the Israelites."
So Moses took the ransom money to account for the difference in the total number of those redeemed by the descendants of Levi. 49So Moses collected the redemption amount from those in excess of the ones redeemed by the Levites.
From the firstborn of the Israelis, Moses took money amounting to 1,365 shekels according to the shekel of the sanctuary. 50He collected the silver from the firstborn Israelites: 1,365 shekels measured by the standard sanctuary shekel.
Moses gave the ransom money to Aaron and his sons according to the LORD's instructions, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.51He gave the redemption silver to Aaron and his sons in obedience to the LORD, just as the LORD commanded Moses.
