| 1This is a record of the genealogies of Aaron and Moses current as of the day on which the LORD addressed Moses on Mount Sinai. | 1Now these are the records of the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai. |
| 2The sons of Aaron were Nadab the first-born, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar | 2These then are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. |
| 3who were anointed priests and whom he consecrated as priests. | 3These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests. |
| 4Nadab and Abihu died in the LORD's presence when they offered unauthorized fire before him in the Sinai wilderness. Since they didn't have their own children, Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priest under the authority of Aaron their father. | 4But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai; and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of their father Aaron. |
| 5The LORD told Moses, | 5Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, |
| 6"Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them to Aaron the priest so they may serve him. | 6"Bring the tribe of Levi near and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him. |
| 7They are to take care of his needs and the needs of the whole congregation at the Tent of Meeting by performing duties at the tent. | 7"They shall perform the duties for him and for the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle. |
| 8They are to take charge of the utensils at the Tent of Meeting and meet the needs of the Israelis by performing duties on behalf of the tent. | 8"They shall also keep all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, along with the duties of the sons of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. |
| 9Assign the descendants of Levi to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelis. | 9"You shall thus give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given to him from among the sons of Israel. |
| 10Appoint Aaron and his sons so that they are to take responsibility for their priesthood. Any unauthorized person who approaches it is to be put to death." | 10"So you shall appoint Aaron and his sons that they may keep their priesthood, but the layman who comes near shall be put to death." |
| 11Later, the LORD told Moses, | 11Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, |
| 12"I'm taking the descendants of Levi for myself from among the Israelis in place of every first-born who opens the womb. The descendants of Levi belong to me | 12"Now, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel instead of every firstborn, the first issue of the womb among the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be Mine. |
| 13because all the first-born belong to me. When I destroyed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated all the first-born in Israel for myself—from human beings to livestock. They belong to me, since I am the LORD." | 13"For all the firstborn are Mine; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, from man to beast. They shall be Mine; I am the LORD." |
| 14The LORD also told Moses in the Sinai wilderness, | 14Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, |
| 15"Number the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral houses and tribes, numbering every male from a month old and above." | 15"Number the sons of Levi by their fathers' households, by their families; every male from a month old and upward you shall number." |
| 16So Moses numbered them according to the instruction of the LORD, as he had been commanded. | 16So Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, just as he had been commanded. |
| 17These are Levi's descendants by name: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. | 17These then are the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon and Kohath and Merari. |
| 18These are names of Gershon's descendants according to their families: Libni and Shimei. | 18These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei; |
| 19These are the names of Kohath's descendants according to their families: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. | 19and the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel; |
| 20Merari's descendants according to their families were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the descendants of Levi according to their ancestral house. | 20and the sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers' households. |
| 21The families of Libni and Shimei were descendants of Gershon. As families of the descendants of Gershon, | 21Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimeites; these were the families of the Gershonites. |
| 22all the males a month old and above numbered 7,500. | 22Their numbered men, in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, even their numbered men were 7,500. |
| 23The families of the descendants of Gershon encamped behind the tent toward the west. | 23The families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle westward, |
| 24The leader of the tribe and family of Gershon was Lael's son Eliasaph. | 24and the leader of the fathers' households of the Gershonites was Eliasaph the son of Lael. |
| 25The duties of the descendants of Gershon at the Tent of Meeting pertained to the tent, the tent covering, the curtain to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, | 25Now the duties of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting involved the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, and the screen for the doorway of the tent of meeting, |
| 26the hangings at the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance of the courtyard that surrounded the tent, the altar, and all of the tent cords in use. | 26and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the doorway of the court which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords, according to all the service concerning them. |
| 27The families of Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel were descendants of Kohath. As families of the descendants of Kohath, | 27Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites. |
| 28all the males a month old and above numbered 8,600. They were tasked to the care of the sanctuary. | 28In the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, there were 8,600, performing the duties of the sanctuary. |
| 29The descendants of Kohath encamped beside the tent toward the south. | 29The families of the sons of Kohath were to camp on the southward side of the tabernacle, |
| 30The leader of the tribe and family of Kohath was Uzziel's son Elizaphan. | 30and the leader of the fathers' households of the Kohathite families was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel. |
| 31Their duties pertained to the ark, the table, the lamp stand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary with which they ministered, and all the curtains in use. | 31Now their duties involved the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the utensils of the sanctuary with which they minister, and the screen, and all the service concerning them; |
| 32The chief of all the leaders of the descendants of Levi was Aaron the priest's son Eleazar. He was assigned to oversee those who were in charge of the services of the sanctuary. | 32and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was the chief of the leaders of Levi, and had the oversight of those who perform the duties of the sanctuary. |
| 33The families of Mahli and Mushi were descendants of Merari. As families of Merari, | 33Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari. |
| 34all the males a month old and above numbered 6,200. | 34Their numbered men in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, were 6,200. |
| 35The leader of the tribe and family of Merari was Abihail's son Zuriel. The descendants of Merari encamped beside the tent toward the north. | 35The leader of the fathers' households of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They were to camp on the northward side of the tabernacle. |
| 36The duties of the caretakers from the descendants of Merari included the boards of the tent, its bars, crossbars, sockets, all its utensils for their services, | 36Now the appointed duties of the sons of Merari involved the frames of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, all its equipment, and the service concerning them, |
| 37the pillars around the courtyard, their sockets, pegs, and tent cords. | 37and the pillars around the court with their sockets and their pegs and their cords. |
| 38In front of the tent and east of the Tent of Meeting, Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons encamped facing the east. They were tasked to perform the duties of the sanctuary and care for the needs of the Israelis. Any unauthorized person who approached was to be executed. | 38Now those who were to camp before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrise, are Moses and Aaron and his sons, performing the duties of the sanctuary for the obligation of the sons of Israel; but the layman coming near was to be put to death. |
| 39As the LORD had instructed, everyone counted by Moses and Aaron from the descendants of Levi, according to their tribe, all males from a month old and above numbered 22,000. | 39All the numbered men of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the command of the LORD by their families, every male from a month old and upward, were 22,000. |
| 40Later the LORD instructed Moses: "Number all the first-born males of Israel from a month old and above and list their names. | 40Then the LORD said to Moses, "Number every firstborn male of the sons of Israel from a month old and upward, and make a list of their names. |
| 41Separate the descendants of Levi for me—since I am the LORD—in place of all the first-born sons of Israel. Also separate the livestock of the descendants of Levi in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of Israel." | 41"You shall take the Levites for Me, I am the LORD, instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the sons of Israel." |
| 42So Moses numbered all the firstborn from the sons of Israel just as the LORD commanded him. | 42So Moses numbered all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, just as the LORD had commanded him; |
| 43All the first-born males according to the list of their names from a month old and above numbered 22,273. | 43and all the firstborn males by the number of names from a month old and upward, for their numbered men were 22,273. |
| 44Then the LORD told Moses, | 44Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, |
| 45"Separate the descendants of Levi in place of all the firstborn sons of Israel and the livestock of the descendants of Levi in place of their livestock. The descendants of Levi belong to me, since I am the LORD. | 45"Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel and the cattle of the Levites. And the Levites shall be Mine; I am the LORD. |
| 46You are to pay a ransom for the 273 first-born Israelis who exceed the census number of the descendants of Levi, | 46"For the ransom of the 273 of the firstborn of the sons of Israel who are in excess beyond the Levites, |
| 47so collect five shekels for each individual, denominated in shekels of the sanctuary, that is, the shekel that weighs 20 gerahs. | 47you shall take five shekels apiece, per head; you shall take them in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs), |
| 48Then give the money meant for ransom of their excess to Aaron and his sons." | 48and give the money, the ransom of those who are in excess among them, to Aaron and to his sons." |
| 49So Moses took the ransom money to account for the difference in the total number of those redeemed by the descendants of Levi. | 49So Moses took the ransom money from those who were in excess, beyond those ransomed by the Levites; |
| 50From the firstborn of the Israelis, Moses took money amounting to 1,365 shekels according to the shekel of the sanctuary. | 50from the firstborn of the sons of Israel he took the money in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary, 1,365. |
| 51Moses gave the ransom money to Aaron and his sons according to the LORD's instructions, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. | 51Then Moses gave the ransom money to Aaron and to his sons, at the command of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses. |
