| 1The wilderness and the dry land will be glad; the desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose. | 1Even the wilderness and desert will be glad in those days. The wasteland will rejoice and blossom with spring crocuses. |
| 2It will blossom abundantly and will also rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon. They will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. | 2Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers and singing and joy! The deserts will become as green as the mountains of Lebanon, as lovely as Mount Carmel or the plain of Sharon. There the LORD will display his glory, the splendor of our God. |
| 3Strengthen the weak hands, steady the shaking knees! | 3With this news, strengthen those who have tired hands, and encourage those who have weak knees. |
| 4Say to the cowardly:" Be strong; do not fear! Here is your God; vengeance is coming. God's retribution is coming; He will save you." | 4Say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy your enemies. He is coming to save you.” |
| 5Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped. | 5And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind and unplug the ears of the deaf. |
| 6Then the lame will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will sing for joy, for water will gush in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; | 6The lame will leap like a deer, and those who cannot speak will sing for joy! Springs will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams will water the wasteland. |
| 7the parched ground will become a pool of water, and the thirsty land springs of water. In the haunt of jackals, in their lairs, there will be grass, reeds, and papyrus. | 7The parched ground will become a pool, and springs of water will satisfy the thirsty land. Marsh grass and reeds and rushes will flourish where desert jackals once lived. |
| 8A road will be there and a way; it will be called the Holy Way. The unclean will not travel on it, but it will be for the one who walks the path. Even the fool will not go astray. | 8And a great road will go through that once deserted land. It will be named the Highway of Holiness. Evil-minded people will never travel on it. It will be only for those who walk in God’s ways; fools will never walk there. |
| 9There will be no lion there, and no vicious beast will go up on it; they will not be found there. But the redeemed will walk on it, | 9Lions will not lurk along its course, nor any other ferocious beasts. There will be no other dangers. Only the redeemed will walk on it. |
| 10and the redeemed of the LORD will return and come to Zion with singing, crowned with unending joy. Joy and gladness will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee. | 10Those who have been ransomed by the LORD will return. They will enter Jerusalem singing, crowned with everlasting joy. Sorrow and mourning will disappear, and they will be filled with joy and gladness. |
