English Standard Version | New Living Translation |
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD. | 1One day the members of the heavenly court came again to present themselves before the LORD, and the Accuser, Satan, came with them. |
And the LORD said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” | 2“Where have you come from?” the LORD asked Satan. Satan answered the LORD, “I have been patrolling the earth, watching everything that’s going on.” |
And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason.” | 3Then the LORD asked Satan, “Have you noticed my servant Job? He is the finest man in all the earth. He is blameless—a man of complete integrity. He fears God and stays away from evil. And he has maintained his integrity, even though you urged me to harm him without cause.” |
Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life. | 4Satan replied to the LORD, “Skin for skin! A man will give up everything he has to save his life. |
But stretch out your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.” | 5But reach out and take away his health, and he will surely curse you to your face!” |
And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.” | 6“All right, do with him as you please,” the LORD said to Satan. “But spare his life.” |
So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. | 7So Satan left the LORD’s presence, and he struck Job with terrible boils from head to foot. |
And he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes. | 8Job scraped his skin with a piece of broken pottery as he sat among the ashes. |
Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die.” | 9His wife said to him, “Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.” |
But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips. | 10But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong. Job’s Three Friends Share His Anguish |
Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to show him sympathy and comfort him. | 11When three of Job’s friends heard of the tragedy he had suffered, they got together and traveled from their homes to comfort and console him. Their names were Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. |
And when they saw him from a distance, they did not recognize him. And they raised their voices and wept, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads toward heaven. | 12When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief. |
And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great. | 13Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words. |
