English Standard Version | NET Bible |
Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised in the city of our God! His holy mountain, | 1A song, a psalm by the Korahites. The LORD is great and certainly worthy of praise in the city of our God, his holy hill. |
beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth, Mount Zion, in the far north, the city of the great King. | 2It is lofty and pleasing to look at, a source of joy to the whole earth. Mount Zion resembles the peaks of Zaphon; it is the city of the great king. |
Within her citadels God has made himself known as a fortress. | 3God is in its fortresses; he reveals himself as its defender. |
For behold, the kings assembled; they came on together. | 4For look, the kings assemble; they advance together. |
As soon as they saw it, they were astounded; they were in panic; they took to flight. | 5As soon as they see, they are shocked; they are terrified, they quickly retreat. |
Trembling took hold of them there, anguish as of a woman in labor. | 6Look at them shake uncontrollably, like a woman writhing in childbirth. |
By the east wind you shattered the ships of Tarshish. | 7With an east wind you shatter the large ships. |
As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God, which God will establish forever. Selah | 8We heard about God's mighty deeds, now we have seen them, in the city of the LORD, the invincible Warrior, in the city of our God. God makes it permanently secure. (Selah) |
We have thought on your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple. | 9We reflect on your loyal love, O God, within your temple. |
As your name, O God, so your praise reaches to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is filled with righteousness. | 10The praise you receive as far away as the ends of the earth is worthy of your reputation, O God. You execute justice! |
Let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your judgments! | 11Mount Zion rejoices; the towns of Judah are happy, because of your acts of judgment. |
Walk about Zion, go around her, number her towers, | 12Walk around Zion! Encircle it! Count its towers! |
consider well her ramparts, go through her citadels, that you may tell the next generation | 13Consider its defenses! Walk through its fortresses, so you can tell the next generation about it! |
that this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us forever. | 14For God, our God, is our defender forever! He guides us! |
