| 1These are the inheritances that the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the people of Israel gave them to inherit. | 1The following is a record of the territory assigned to the Israelites in the land of Canaan by Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite tribal leaders. |
| 2Their inheritance was by lot, just as the LORD had commanded by the hand of Moses for the nine and one-half tribes. | 2The land assignments to the nine-and-a-half tribes were made by drawing lots, as the LORD had instructed Moses. |
| 3For Moses had given an inheritance to the two and one-half tribes beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them. | 3Now Moses had assigned land to the two-and-a-half tribes east of the Jordan, but he assigned no land to the Levites. |
| 4For the people of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion was given to the Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their substance. | 4The descendants of Joseph were considered as two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites were allotted no territory, though they were assigned cities in which to live, along with the grazing areas for their cattle and possessions. |
| 5The people of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses; they allotted the land. | 5The Israelites followed the LORD's instructions to Moses and divided up the land. |
| 6Then the people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God in Kadesh-barnea concerning you and me. | 6The men of Judah approached Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know what the LORD said about you and me to Moses, the man of God, at Kadesh Barnea. |
| 7I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. | 7I was forty years old when Moses, the LORD's servant, sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy on the land and I brought back to him an honest report. |
| 8But my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the LORD my God. | 8My countrymen who accompanied me frightened the people, but I remained loyal to the LORD my God. |
| 9And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land on which your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.’ | 9That day Moses made this solemn promise: 'Surely the land on which you walked will belong to you and your descendants permanently, for you remained loyal to the LORD your God.' |
| 10And now, behold, the LORD has kept me alive, just as he said, these forty-five years since the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. And now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old. | 10So now, look, the LORD has preserved my life, just as he promised, these past forty-five years since the LORD spoke these words to Moses, during which Israel traveled through the wilderness. Now look, I am today eighty-five years old. |
| 11I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; my strength now is as my strength was then, for war and for going and coming. | 11Today I am still as strong as when Moses sent me out. I can fight and go about my daily activities with the same energy I had then. |
| 12So now give me this hill country of which the LORD spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the LORD said.” | 12Now, assign me this hill country which the LORD promised me at that time! No doubt you heard at that time that the Anakites live there in large, fortified cities. But, assuming the LORD is with me, I will conquer them, as the LORD promised." |
| 13Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. | 13Joshua asked God to empower Caleb son of Jephunneh and assigned him Hebron. |
| 14Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel. | 14So Hebron remains the assigned land of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this very day because he remained loyal to the LORD God of Israel. |
| 15Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba. (Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim.) And the land had rest from war. | 15(Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba. Arba was a famous Anakite.) Then the land was free of war. |
