Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women.1So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. Then he commanded him, "You must not marry a Canaanite woman!
Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother.2Leave immediately for Paddan Aram! Go to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father, and find yourself a wife there, among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.
God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.3May the sovereign God bless you! May he make you fruitful and give you a multitude of descendants! Then you will become a large nation.
May he give the blessing of Abraham to you and to your offspring with you, that you may take possession of the land of your sojournings that God gave to Abraham!”4May he give you and your descendants the blessing he gave to Abraham so that you may possess the land God gave to Abraham, the land where you have been living as a temporary resident."
Thus Isaac sent Jacob away. And he went to Paddan-aram, to Laban, the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.5So Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean and brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.
Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women,”6Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him off to Paddan Aram to find a wife there. As he blessed him, Isaac commanded him, "You must not marry a Canaanite woman."
and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and gone to Paddan-aram.7Jacob obeyed his father and mother and left for Paddan Aram.
So when Esau saw that the Canaanite women did not please Isaac his father,8Then Esau realized that the Canaanite women were displeasing to his father Isaac.
Esau went to Ishmael and took as his wife, besides the wives he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth.9So Esau went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Abraham's son Ishmael, along with the wives he already had.
Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran.10Meanwhile Jacob left Beer Sheba and set out for Haran.
And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep.11He reached a certain place where he decided to camp because the sun had gone down. He took one of the stones and placed it near his head. Then he fell asleep in that place
And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it!12and had a dream. He saw a stairway erected on the earth with its top reaching to the heavens. The angels of God were going up and coming down it
And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring.13and the LORD stood at its top. He said, "I am the LORD, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of your father Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the ground you are lying on.
Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.14Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, east, north, and south. All the families of the earth will pronounce blessings on one another using your name and that of your descendants.
Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”15I am with you! I will protect you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I promised you!"
Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.”16Then Jacob woke up and thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, but I did not realize it!"
And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”17He was afraid and said, "What an awesome place this is! This is nothing else than the house of God! This is the gate of heaven!"
So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it.18Early in the morning Jacob took the stone he had placed near his head and set it up as a sacred stone. Then he poured oil on top of it.
He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.19He called that place Bethel, although the former name of the town was Luz.
Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear,20Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God is with me and protects me on this journey I am taking and gives me food to eat and clothing to wear,
so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God,21and I return safely to my father's home, then the LORD will become my God.
and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”22Then this stone that I have set up as a sacred stone will be the house of God, and I will surely give you back a tenth of everything you give me."
