| 4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. | 4For the Messiah is the culmination of the Law as far as righteousness is concerned for everyone who believes. |
| 5For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. | 5For Moses writes about the righteousness that comes from the Law as follows: "The person who obeys these things will find life by them." |
| 6But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) | 6But the righteousness that comes from faith says, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will go up to heaven?' (that is, to bring the Messiah down), |
| 7“or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). | 7or 'Who will go down into the depths?' (that is, to bring the Messiah back from the dead)." |
| 8But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); | 8But what does it say? "The message is near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart." This is the message about faith that we are proclaiming: |
| 9because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. | 9If you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. |
| 10For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. | 10For one believes with his heart and is justified, and declares with his mouth and is saved. |
| 11For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” | 11The Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will never be ashamed." |

| 15And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” | 15And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are those who bring the good news!" |
| 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” | 16But not everyone has obeyed the gospel, for Isaiah asks, "Lord, who has believed our message?" |
| 17So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. | 17Consequently, faith results from listening, and listening results through the word of the Messiah. |
| 18But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for “Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.” | 18But I ask, "Didn't they hear?" Certainly they did! In fact, "Their voice has gone out into the whole world, and their words to the ends of the earth." |
| 19But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says, “I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; with a foolish nation I will make you angry.” | 19Again I ask, "Did Israel not understand?" Moses was the first to say, "I will make you jealous by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that doesn't understand." |
| 20Then Isaiah is so bold as to say, “I have been found by those who did not seek me; I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.” | 20And Isaiah boldly says, "I was found by those who were not looking for me; I was revealed to those who were not asking for me." |
| 21But of Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.” | 21But about Israel he says, "All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and rebellious people." |
