Christian Standard BibleNew International Version
For freedom, Christ set us free. Stand firm then and don't submit again to a yoke of slavery.1It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Take note! I, Paul, am telling you that if you get yourselves circumcised, Christ will not benefit you at all.2Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all.
Again I testify to every man who gets himself circumcised that he is obligated to do the entire law.3Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.
You who are trying to be justified by the law are alienated from Christ; you have fallen from grace.4You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.
For we eagerly await through the Spirit, by faith, the hope of righteousness.5For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope.
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision accomplishes anything; what matters is faith working through love.6For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
You were running well. Who prevented you from being persuaded regarding the truth?7You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?
This persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.8That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you.
A little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough.9"A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough."
I myself am persuaded in the Lord you will not accept any other view. But whoever it is that is confusing you will pay the penalty.10I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty.
Now brothers and sisters, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.11Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished.
I wish those who are disturbing you might also let themselves be mutilated!12As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!
For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don't use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love.13You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.
For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement: Love your neighbor as yourself.14For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."
But if you bite and devour one another, watch out, or you will be consumed by one another.15If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will certainly not carry out the desire of the flesh.16So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don't do what you want.17For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity,19The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions,20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions
envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things--as I warned you before--that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
