LORD, do not punish me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. | 1A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! |
For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has pressed down on me. | 2For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down. |
There is no soundness in my body because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. | 3My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin. |
For my iniquities have flooded over my head; they are a burden too heavy for me to bear. | 4For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear. |
My wounds are foul and festering because of my foolishness. | 5My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins. |
I am bent over and brought very low; all day long I go around in mourning. | 6I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning. |
For my insides are full of burning pain, and there is no soundness in my body. | 7For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick. |
I am faint and severely crushed; I groan because of the anguish of my heart. | 8I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. |
Lord, my every desire is in front of you; my sighing is not hidden from you. | 9O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you. |
My heart races, my strength leaves me, and even the light of my eyes has faded. | 10My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see. |
My loved ones and friends stand back from my affliction, and my relatives stand at a distance. | 11Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away. |
Those who intend to kill me set traps, and those who want to harm me threaten to destroy me; they plot treachery all day long. | 12Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things. |
I am like a deaf person; I do not hear. I am like a speechless person who does not open his mouth. | 13But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak. |
I am like a man who does not hear and has no arguments in his mouth. | 14I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. |
For I put my hope in you, LORD; you will answer me, my Lord, my God. | 15Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God! |
For I said, "Don't let them rejoice over me--those who are arrogant toward me when I stumble." | 16I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. |
For I am about to fall, and my pain is constantly with me. | 17For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. |
So I confess my iniquity; I am anxious because of my sin. | 18Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins. |
But my enemies are vigorous and powerful; many hate me for no reason. | 19But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me. |
Those who repay evil for good attack me for pursuing good. | 20They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. |
LORD, do not abandon me; my God, do not be far from me. | 21Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me! |
Hurry to help me, my Lord, my salvation. | 22Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer! |
