I said, "I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence." | 1For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of David. I decided, "I will watch what I say and make sure I do not sin with my tongue. I will put a muzzle over my mouth while in the presence of an evil man." |
I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from speaking good, and my pain intensified. | 2I was stone silent; I held back the urge to speak. My frustration grew; |
My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue: | 3my anxiety intensified. As I thought about it, I became impatient. Finally I spoke these words: |
"LORD, make me aware of my end and the number of my days so that I will know how short-lived I am. | 4"O LORD, help me understand my mortality and the brevity of life! Let me realize how quickly my life will pass! |
In fact, you have made my days just inches long, and my life span is as nothing to you. Yes, every human being stands as only a vapor. Selah | 5Look, you make my days short-lived, and my life span is nothing from your perspective. Surely all people, even those who seem secure, are nothing but vapor. |
Yes, a person goes about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them. | 6Surely people go through life as mere ghosts. Surely they accumulate worthless wealth without knowing who will eventually haul it away." |
"Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you. | 7But now, O Lord, upon what am I relying? You are my only hope! |
Rescue me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools. | 8Deliver me from all my sins of rebellion! Do not make me the object of fools' insults! |
I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what you have done. | 9I am silent and cannot open my mouth because of what you have done. |
Remove your torment from me. Because of the force of your hand I am finished. | 10Please stop wounding me! You have almost beaten me to death! |
You discipline a person with punishment for iniquity, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; yes, every human being is only a vapor. Selah | 11You severely discipline people for their sins; like a moth you slowly devour their strength. Surely all people are a mere vapor. (Selah) |
"Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am here with you as an alien, a temporary resident like all my ancestors. | 12Hear my prayer, O LORD! Listen to my cry for help! Do not ignore my sobbing! For I am dependent on you, like one residing outside his native land; I am at your mercy, just as all my ancestors were. |
Turn your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone." | 13Turn your angry gaze away from me, so I can be happy before I pass away. |
