Parallel Chapters Wives and Husbands
(Song of Solomon 1:1-3; Ephesians 5:22-33) 1Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, | 1Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, | 1In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, | 1Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; | 1In the same way, wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, even if some disobey the Christian message, they may be won over without a message by the way their wives live |
2when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. | 2when they see your respectful and pure conduct. | 2as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. | 2While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. | 2when they observe your pure, reverent lives. |
3Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. | 3Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— | 3Your adornment must not be merely external-- braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; | 3Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; | 3Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold ornaments or fine clothes. |
4Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. | 4but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. | 4but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. | 4But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. | 4Instead, it should consist of what is inside the heart with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very valuable in God's eyes. |
5For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, | 5For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, | 5For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands; | 5For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: | 5For in the past, the holy women who put their hope in God also beautified themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands, |
6like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. | 6as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. | 6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear. | 6Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. | 6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You have become her children when you do what is good and are not frightened by anything alarming. |
7Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. | 7Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. | 7You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. | 7Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered. | 7Husbands, in the same way, live with your wives with an understanding of their weaker nature yet showing them honor as coheirs of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. |
Turn from Evil 8Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. | 8Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. | 8To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; | 8Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: | 8Now finally, all of you should be like-minded and sympathetic, should love believers, and be compassionate and humble, |
9Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. | 9Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. | 9not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. | 9Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. | 9not paying back evil for evil or insult for insult but, on the contrary, giving a blessing, since you were called for this, so that you can inherit a blessing. |
10For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. | 10For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; | 10For, "THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT. | 10For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: | 10For the one who wants to love life and to see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit, |
11They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it. | 11let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. | 11"HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT. | 11Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. | 11and he must turn away from evil and do what is good. 12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." | 12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. 13Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? | 13Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? | 13Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? | 13And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? | 13And who will harm you if you are deeply committed to what is good? |
Suffering for Righteousness
(Romans 6:15-23) 14But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened." | 14But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, | 14But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, | 14But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; | 14But even if you should suffer for righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear or be disturbed, |
15But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, | 15but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, | 15but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; | 15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: | 15but honor the Messiah as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. |
16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. | 16having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. | 16and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. | 16Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. | 16However, do this with gentleness and respect, keeping your conscience clear, so that when you are accused, those who denounce your Christian life will be put to shame. |

18For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. 20to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, | 20because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. | 20who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. | 20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. | 20who in the past were disobedient, when God patiently waited in the days of Noah while an ark was being prepared. 21and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, | 21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, | 21Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, | 21The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: | 21Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. |
22who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. | 22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him. | 22who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him. | 22Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. | 22Now that He has gone into heaven, He is at God's right hand with angels, authorities, and powers subject to Him. |
