Jonah’s Prayer

1  וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֣ל (And prayed) יוֹנָ֔ה (Jonah) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֑יו (his God) מִמְּעֵ֖י (from the bowels), הַדָּגָֽה׃ (of the fish). 2  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said),

קָ֠רָאתִי (I called out) מִצָּ֥רָה (from the distress) לִ֛י (of mine) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH),

וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי (and He answered me)

מִבֶּ֧טֶן (from the belly) שְׁא֛וֹל (of Sheol) שִׁוַּ֖עְתִּי (I cried out)

שָׁמַ֥עְתָּ (You heard) קוֹלִֽי׃ (my voice).

3  וַתַּשְׁלִיכֵ֤נִי (And You cast me) מְצוּלָה֙ (into the deep),

בִּלְבַ֣ב (in the heart) יַמִּ֔ים (of the seas);

וְנָהָ֖ר (and the current) יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי (surrounded me);

כָּל־ (all) מִשְׁבָּרֶ֥יךָ (Your billows) וְגַלֶּ֖יךָ (and Your waves) עָלַ֥י (over me) עָבָֽרוּ׃ (passed).

4  וַאֲנִ֣י (And I) אָמַ֔רְתִּי (said),

נִגְרַ֖שְׁתִּי (I have been driven out) מִנֶּ֣גֶד (from before) עֵינֶ֑יךָ (Your eyes);

אַ֚ךְ (yet) אוֹסִ֣יף (I will add) לְהַבִּ֔יט (to look)

אֶל־ (toward) הֵיכַ֖ל (the temple) קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ (of Your holiness).

5  אֲפָפ֤וּנִי (Surrounded me), מַ֙יִם֙ (the waters)

עַד־ (up to) נֶ֔פֶשׁ (the soul).

תְּה֖וֹם (The deep) יְסֹבְבֵ֑נִי (closed around me),

ס֖וּף (the seaweed) חָב֥וּשׁ (wrapped) לְרֹאשִֽׁי׃ (around my head).

6  לְקִצְבֵ֤י (To the bases) הָרִים֙ (of the mountains); יָרַ֔דְתִּי (I went down)

הָאָ֛רֶץ (the earth) בְּרִחֶ֥יהָ (with her bars) בַעֲדִ֖י (was behind me) לְעוֹלָ֑ם (forever),

וַתַּ֧עַל (and You brought up) מִשַּׁ֛חַת (from the pit), חַיַּ֖י (my life)

יְהוָ֥ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהָֽי׃ (my God).

7  בְּהִתְעַטֵּ֤ף (At the fainting) עָלַי֙ (within me) נַפְשִׁ֔י (of my soul) אֶת־ (-)

יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) זָכָ֑רְתִּי (I remembered)

וַתָּב֤וֹא (and came in) אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ (to You) תְּפִלָּתִ֔י (my prayer)

אֶל־ (to) הֵיכַ֖ל (the temple) קָדְשֶֽׁךָ׃ (of Your holiness).

8  מְשַׁמְּרִ֖ים (Those guarding) הַבְלֵי־ (vanities) שָׁ֑וְא (of worthlessness)

חַסְדָּ֖ם (their loving devotion) יַעֲזֹֽבוּ׃ (leave behind).

9  וַאֲנִ֗י (And I) בְּק֤וֹל (with a voice) תּוֹדָה֙ (of thanksgiving);

אֶזְבְּחָה־ (will sacrifice) לָּ֔ךְ (to You)

אֲשֶׁ֥ר (what) נָדַ֖רְתִּי (I have vowed). אֲשַׁלֵּ֑מָה (I will fulfill)

יְשׁוּעָ֖תָה (Salvation is) לַיהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).

10  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לַדָּ֑ג (to the fish), וַיָּקֵ֥א (and it vomited) אֶת־ (-) יוֹנָ֖ה (Jonah) אֶל־ (onto) הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃פ (the dry land).
