True Fasts and Sabbaths

1  קְרָ֤א (Call out) בְגָרוֹן֙ (from the throat), אַל־ (do not), תַּחְשֹׂ֔ךְ (hold back)

כַּשּׁוֹפָ֖ר (like a shofar), הָרֵ֣ם (lift up) קוֹלֶ֑ךָ (your voice)

וְהַגֵּ֤ד (and declare) לְעַמִּי֙ (to My people) פִּשְׁעָ֔ם (their transgression),

וּלְבֵ֥ית (and to the house) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (of Jacob) חַטֹּאתָֽם׃ (their sins).

2  וְאוֹתִ֗י (And Me) י֥וֹם (day) יוֹם֙ (by day), יִדְרֹשׁ֔וּן (they seek)

וְדַ֥עַת (and to know) דְּרָכַ֖י (My ways), יֶחְפָּצ֑וּן (and they delight)

כְּג֞וֹי (like a nation) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צְדָקָ֣ה (righteousness), עָשָׂ֗ה (does)

וּמִשְׁפַּ֤ט (and the justice) אֱלֹהָיו֙ (of their God). לֹ֣א (Not) עָזָ֔ב (do forsake)

יִשְׁאָל֙וּנִי֙ (They ask me for) מִשְׁפְּטֵי־ (judgments) צֶ֔דֶק (of righteousness);

קִרְבַ֥ת (in the nearness) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God) יֶחְפָּצֽוּן׃ (they delight).

3  לָ֤מָּה (Why) צַּ֙מְנוּ֙ (have we fasted),

וְלֹ֣א (and not)? רָאִ֔יתָ (You have seen)

עִנִּ֥ינוּ (we have afflicted) נַפְשֵׁ֖נוּ (our soul),

וְלֹ֣א (and not) תֵדָ֑ע (you have noticed)?

הֵ֣ן (Behold), בְּי֤וֹם (on the day) צֹֽמְכֶם֙ (of your⁺ fast) תִּמְצְאוּ־ (you⁺ find) חֵ֔פֶץ (pleasure),

וְכָל־ (and all) עַצְּבֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ laborers) תִּנְגֹּֽשׂוּ׃ (you⁺ oppress).

4  הֵ֣ן (Behold), לְרִ֤יב (for quarreling) וּמַצָּה֙ (and strife), תָּצ֔וּמוּ (you⁺ fast)

וּלְהַכּ֖וֹת (and for striking) בְּאֶגְרֹ֣ף (with the fist) רֶ֑שַׁע (of wickedness);

לֹא־ (not) תָצ֣וּמוּ (you⁺ shall fast) כַיּ֔וֹם (like this day),

לְהַשְׁמִ֥יעַ (be able to make heard) בַּמָּר֖וֹם (on high) קוֹלְכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ voice).

5  הֲכָזֶ֗ה (Like this) יִֽהְיֶה֙ (is it) צ֣וֹם (the fast) אֶבְחָרֵ֔הוּ (I choose)?

י֛וֹם (A day) עַנּ֥וֹת (for afflicting) אָדָ֖ם (a man) נַפְשׁ֑וֹ (his soul)?

הֲלָכֹ֨ף (For bowing down) כְּאַגְמֹ֜ן (like a reed), רֹאשׁ֗וֹ (his head)

וְשַׂ֤ק (and sackcloth) וָאֵ֙פֶר֙ (and ashes) יַצִּ֔יעַ (spreading out)

הֲלָזֶה֙ (this) תִּקְרָא־ (do you call) צ֔וֹם (a fast),

וְי֥וֹם (and a day) רָצ֖וֹן (of pleasure) לַיהוָֽה׃ (for YHWH)?

6  הֲל֣וֹא (Is not) זֶה֮ (this) צ֣וֹם (the fast) אֶבְחָרֵהוּ֒ (I choose)?

פַּתֵּ֙חַ֙ (To open) חַרְצֻבּ֣וֹת (the bonds) רֶ֔שַׁע (of wickedness),

הַתֵּ֖ר (to untie) אֲגֻדּ֣וֹת (the cords), מוֹטָ֑ה (of the yoke)

וְשַׁלַּ֤ח (and to send forth) רְצוּצִים֙ (the crushed ones) חָפְשִׁ֔ים (free),

וְכָל־ (and every) מוֹטָ֖ה (yoke) תְּנַתֵּֽקוּ׃ (tear off)?

7  הֲל֨וֹא (Is it not) פָרֹ֤ס (to distribute) לָֽרָעֵב֙ (to the hungry), לַחְמֶ֔ךָ (your bread)

וַעֲנִיִּ֥ים (and the poor) מְרוּדִ֖ים (wandering) תָּ֣בִיא (you should bring into) בָ֑יִת (the house)?

כִּֽי־ (When) תִרְאֶ֤ה (you see) עָרֹם֙ (one naked), וְכִסִּית֔וֹ (then clothe him)

וּמִבְּשָׂרְךָ֖ (from your own flesh)? לֹ֥א (And do not)

תִתְעַלָּֽם׃ (hide yourself).

8  אָ֣ז (Then) יִבָּקַ֤ע (will break forth) כַּשַּׁ֙חַר֙ (like the dawn), אוֹרֶ֔ךָ (your light)

וַאֲרֻכָתְךָ֖ (and your healing) מְהֵרָ֣ה (quickly); תִצְמָ֑ח (will sprout)

וְהָלַ֤ךְ (and will go) לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ (before you) צִדְקֶ֔ךָ (your righteousness)

כְּב֥וֹד (the glory) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) יַאַסְפֶֽךָ׃ (will gather behind you).

9  אָ֤ז (Then) תִּקְרָא֙ (you will call), וַיהוָ֣ה (and YHWH) יַעֲנֶ֔ה (will answer);

תְּשַׁוַּ֖ע (you will cry out), וְיֹאמַ֣ר (and He will say), הִנֵּ֑נִי (Here I am)

אִם־ (If) תָּסִ֤יר (you take away) מִתּֽוֹכְךָ֙ (from your midst) מוֹטָ֔ה (the yoke),

שְׁלַ֥ח (the pointing) אֶצְבַּ֖ע (of the finger), וְדַבֶּר־ (and the speaking) אָֽוֶן׃ (of wickedness);

10  וְתָפֵ֤ק (and if you extend) לָֽרָעֵב֙ (to the hungry), נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ (your soul)

וְנֶ֥פֶשׁ (soul); נַעֲנָ֖ה (of afflicted) תַּשְׂבִּ֑יעַ (and satisfy)

וְזָרַ֤ח (then will rise) בַּחֹ֙שֶׁךְ֙ (in the darkness), אוֹרֶ֔ךָ (your light)

וַאֲפֵלָתְךָ֖ (and your darkness) כַּֽצָּהֳרָֽיִם׃ (will be like the noonday).

11  וְנָחֲךָ֣ (And will guide you) יְהוָה֮ (YHWH) תָּמִיד֒ (continually),

וְהִשְׂבִּ֤יעַ (and will satisfy) בְּצַחְצָחוֹת֙ (in scorched lands), נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ (your soul)

וְעַצְמֹתֶ֖יךָ (and your bones); יַחֲלִ֑יץ (He will strengthen)

וְהָיִ֙יתָ֙ (and you will be) כְּגַ֣ן (like a garden), רָוֶ֔ה (watered)

וּכְמוֹצָ֣א (and like a spring) מַ֔יִם (of water), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whose) לֹא־ (never) יְכַזְּב֖וּ (do fail) מֵימָֽיו׃ (waters).

12  וּבָנ֤וּ (And will rebuild) מִמְּךָ֙ (some of you) חָרְב֣וֹת (the ruins); עוֹלָ֔ם (of old)

מוֹסְדֵ֥י (the foundations) דוֹר־ (of generation) וָד֖וֹר (and generation); תְּקוֹמֵ֑ם (you will raise up)

וְקֹרָ֤א (and will be called), לְךָ֙ (for you) גֹּדֵ֣ר (Repairer) פֶּ֔רֶץ (of the Breach),

מְשֹׁבֵ֥ב (Restorer) נְתִיב֖וֹת (of the Streets) לָשָֽׁבֶת׃ (of Dwelling).

13  אִם־ (If) תָּשִׁ֤יב (you turn back) מִשַּׁבָּת֙ (from the Sabbath) רַגְלֶ֔ךָ (your foot),

עֲשׂ֥וֹת (doing) חֲפָצֶ֖יךָ (your pleasure) בְּי֣וֹם (day) קָדְשִׁ֑י (on My holy),

וְקָרָ֨אתָ (and if you call) לַשַּׁבָּ֜ת (the Sabbath) עֹ֗נֶג (a delight),

לִקְד֤וֹשׁ (holy) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) מְכֻבָּ֔ד (honored),

וְכִבַּדְתּוֹ֙ (and if you honor it) מֵעֲשׂ֣וֹת (above doing) דְּרָכֶ֔יךָ (your own ways),

מִמְּצ֥וֹא (above finding) חֶפְצְךָ֖ (your own delight), וְדַבֵּ֥ר (and speaking) דָּבָֽר׃ (a word),

14  אָ֗ז (then) תִּתְעַנַּג֙ (you will delight yourself) עַל־ (in) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH);

וְהִרְכַּבְתִּ֖יךָ (and I will cause you to ride) עַל־ (on) בָּ֣מֳותֵי (the heights) אָ֑רֶץ (of the earth),

וְהַאֲכַלְתִּ֗יךָ (and I will feed you) נַחֲלַת֙ (the inheritance) יַעֲקֹ֣ב (of Jacob) אָבִ֔יךָ (your father),

כִּ֛י (For) פִּ֥י (the mouth) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) דִּבֵּֽר׃ס (has spoken).
