Woe to Those Who Rely on Egypt

1  ה֣וֹי (Woe) הַיֹּרְדִ֤ים (to those going down) מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ (to Egypt) לְעֶזְרָ֔ה (for help);

עַל־ (on) סוּסִ֖ים (horses), יִשָּׁעֵ֑נוּ (who rely)

וַיִּבְטְח֨וּ (and trust) עַל־ (in) רֶ֜כֶב (chariots), כִּ֣י (that) רָ֗ב (are many);

וְעַ֤ל (and in) פָּֽרָשִׁים֙ (horsemen), כִּֽי־ (that) עָצְמ֣וּ (numerous) מְאֹ֔ד (they are very);

וְלֹ֤א (and not) שָׁעוּ֙ (they do look) עַל־ (to) קְד֣וֹשׁ (the Holy One) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel),

וְאֶת־ (and) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH)! לֹ֥א (They do not) דָרָֽשׁוּ׃ (seek).

2  וְגַם־ (Also) ה֤וּא (He is) חָכָם֙ (wise), וַיָּ֣בֵא (and He brings) רָ֔ע (disaster),

וְאֶת־ (and) דְּבָרָ֖יו (His words), לֹ֣א (not) הֵסִ֑יר (He does turn aside)

וְקָם֙ (and He will rise up) עַל־ (against) בֵּ֣ית (a house) מְרֵעִ֔ים (of evildoers),

וְעַל־ (and against) עֶזְרַ֖ת (the help) פֹּ֥עֲלֵי (of the workers) אָֽוֶן׃ (of iniquity).

3  וּמִצְרַ֤יִם (For Egypt is) אָדָם֙ (is man), וְֽלֹא־ (and not) אֵ֔ל (God);

וְסוּסֵיהֶ֥ם (and their horses are) בָּשָׂ֖ר (flesh), וְלֹא־ (and not) ר֑וּחַ (Spirit).

וַֽיהוָ֞ה (And YHWH) יַטֶּ֣ה (stretches out) יָד֗וֹ (His hand),

וְכָשַׁ֤ל (and will stumble), עוֹזֵר֙ (the helper)

וְנָפַ֣ל (and will fall), עָזֻ֔ר (the one being helped)

וְיַחְדָּ֖ו (and together). כֻּלָּ֥ם (All of them) יִכְלָיֽוּן׃ס (will perish).

4  כִּ֣י (For) כֹ֣ה (thus) אָֽמַר־ (has said) יְהוָ֣ה׀ (YHWH) אֵלַ֡י (to me)

כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (As) יֶהְגֶּה֩ (roars) הָאַרְיֵ֨ה (the lion)

וְהַכְּפִ֜יר (or the young lion) עַל־ (over) טַרְפּ֗וֹ (his prey),

אֲשֶׁ֨ר (when) יִקָּרֵ֤א (is called) עָלָיו֙ (against him) מְלֹ֣א (a multitude) רֹעִ֔ים (of shepherds)

מִקּוֹלָם֙ (at their voice), לֹ֣א (he is not) יֵחָ֔ת (afraid)

וּמֵֽהֲמוֹנָ֖ם (and at their clamor) לֹ֣א (he is not) יַֽעֲנֶ֑ה (alarmed)

כֵּ֗ן (so) יֵרֵד֙ (will come down) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts) לִצְבֹּ֥א (to fight) עַל־ (on) הַר־ (Mount) צִיּ֖וֹן (Zion),

וְעַל־ (and on) גִּבְעָתָֽהּ׃ (her hill).

5  כְּצִפֳּרִ֣ים (Like birds) עָפ֔וֹת (flying about),

כֵּ֗ן (so) יָגֵ֛ן (will give cover) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) צְבָא֖וֹת (of Hosts) עַל־ (over) יְרֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (Jerusalem);

גָּנ֥וֹן (covering) וְהִצִּ֖יל (and delivering it)

פָּסֹ֥חַ (passing over) וְהִמְלִֽיט׃ (and preserving it).

6  שׁ֗וּבוּ (Return) לַאֲשֶׁ֛ר (to the one) הֶעְמִ֥יקוּ (against whom you have deeply) סָרָ֖ה (rebelled) בְּנֵ֥י (O sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 7  כִּ֚י (For) בַּיּ֣וֹם (day) הַה֔וּא (in that) יִמְאָס֗וּן (will reject) אִ֚ישׁ (a man) אֱלִילֵ֣י (the idols) כַסְפּ֔וֹ (of his silver), וֶאֱלִילֵ֖י (and the idols) זְהָב֑וֹ (of his gold), אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) עָשׂ֥וּ (have made) לָכֶ֛ם (for you⁺) יְדֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ own hands) חֵֽטְא׃ (as sin).

8  וְנָפַ֤ל (Will fall) אַשּׁוּר֙ (and Assyria) בְּחֶ֣רֶב (by a sword), לֹא־ (not) אִ֔ישׁ (of man);

וְחֶ֥רֶב (and a sword), לֹֽא־ (not) אָדָ֖ם (of man), תֹּֽאכֲלֶ֑נּוּ (will devour him)

וְנָ֥ס (and he will flee) לוֹ֙ (from) מִפְּנֵי־ (from the face) חֶ֔רֶב (of the sword),

וּבַחוּרָ֖יו (and his young men) לָמַ֥ס (for forced labor) יִהְיֽוּ׃ (will be).

9  וְסַלְעוֹ֙ (And his stronghold) מִמָּג֣וֹר (at the terror), יַֽעֲב֔וֹר (will pass away)

וְחַתּ֥וּ (will be frightened) מִנֵּ֖ס (at the banner), שָׂרָ֑יו (and his princes)

נְאֻם־ (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֲשֶׁר־ (whose) א֥וּר (fire) לוֹ֙ (unto Him) בְּצִיּ֔וֹן (is in Zion),

וְתַנּ֥וּר (and a furnace) ל֖וֹ (unto Him) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס (is in Jerusalem).
