Paul at Malta

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
1Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta.1After we were brought safely through, we then learned that the island was called Malta.1When they had been brought safely through, then we found out that the island was called Malta.1And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.1Once ashore, we then learned that the island was called Malta.
2The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold.2The native people showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because it had begun to rain and was cold.2The natives showed us extraordinary kindness; for because of the rain that had set in and because of the cold, they kindled a fire and received us all.2And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.2The local people showed us extraordinary kindness, for they lit a fire and took us all in, since it was raining and cold.
3Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand.3When Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and put them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand.3But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand.3And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.3As Paul gathered a bundle of brushwood and put it on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself to his hand.
4When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, "This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live."4When the native people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.”4When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying to one another, "Undoubtedly this man is a murderer, and though he has been saved from the sea, justice has not allowed him to live."4And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.4When the local people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, "This man is probably a murderer, and though he has escaped the sea, Justice does not allow him to live!"

5But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.5He, however, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm.5However he shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm.5And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.5However, he shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm.
6The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.6They were waiting for him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw no misfortune come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.6But they were expecting that he was about to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had waited a long time and had seen nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and began to say that he was a god.6Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.6They expected that he would swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after they waited a long time and saw nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
7There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and showed us generous hospitality for three days.7Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and entertained us hospitably for three days.7Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the leading man of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us courteously three days.7In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.7Now in the area around that place was an estate belonging to the leading man of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us hospitably for three days.
8His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him.8It happened that the father of Publius lay sick with fever and dysentery. And Paul visited him and prayed, and putting his hands on him, healed him.8And it happened that the father of Publius was lying in bed afflicted with recurrent fever and dysentery; and Paul went in to see him and after he had prayed, he laid his hands on him and healed him.8And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.8Publius's father was in bed suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went to him, and praying and laying his hands on him, he healed him.
9When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.9And when this had taken place, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases also came and were cured.9After this had happened, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases were coming to him and getting cured.9So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:9After this, the rest of those on the island who had diseases also came and were cured.
10They honored us in many ways; and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed.10They also honored us greatly, and when we were about to sail, they put on board whatever we needed.10They also honored us with many marks of respect; and when we were setting sail, they supplied us with all we needed.10Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.10So they heaped many honors on us, and when we sailed, they gave us what we needed.

Paul Arrives at Rome

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
11After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island--it was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux.11After three months we set sail in a ship that had wintered in the island, a ship of Alexandria, with the twin gods as a figurehead.11At the end of three months we set sail on an Alexandrian ship which had wintered at the island, and which had the Twin Brothers for its figurehead.11And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.11After three months we set sail in an Alexandrian ship that had wintered at the island, with the Twin Brothers as its figurehead.
12We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days.12Putting in at Syracuse, we stayed there for three days.12After we put in at Syracuse, we stayed there for three days.12And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.12Putting in at Syracuse, we stayed three days.
13From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli.13And from there we made a circuit and arrived at Rhegium. And after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli.13From there we sailed around and arrived at Rhegium, and a day later a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli.13And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:13From there, after making a circuit along the coast, we reached Rhegium. After one day a south wind sprang up, and the second day we came to Puteoli.
14There we found some brothers and sisters who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome.14There we found brothers and were invited to stay with them for seven days. And so we came to Rome.14There we found some brethren, and were invited to stay with them for seven days; and thus we came to Rome.14Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.14There we found believers and were invited to stay with them for seven days. And so we came to Rome.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
15The brothers and sisters there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these people Paul thanked God and was encouraged.15And the brothers there, when they heard about us, came as far as the Forum of Appius and Three Taverns to meet us. On seeing them, Paul thanked God and took courage.15And the brethren, when they heard about us, came from there as far as the Market of Appius and Three Inns to meet us; and when Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.15And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.15Now the believers from there had heard the news about us and had come to meet us as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.
16When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him.16And when we came into Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who guarded him.16When we entered Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him.16And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.16When we entered Rome, Paul was permitted to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him.

Paul Preaches at Rome

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
17Three days later he called together the local Jewish leaders. When they had assembled, Paul said to them: "My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.17After three days he called together the local leaders of the Jews, and when they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.17After three days Paul called together those who were the leading men of the Jews, and when they came together, he began saying to them, "Brethren, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.17And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.17After three days he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them: "Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
18They examined me and wanted to release me, because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death.18When they had examined me, they wished to set me at liberty, because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case.18"And when they had examined me, they were willing to release me because there was no ground for putting me to death.18Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.18After they examined me, they wanted to release me, since I had not committed a capital offense.
19The Jews objected, so I was compelled to make an appeal to Caesar. I certainly did not intend to bring any charge against my own people.19But because the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar—though I had no charge to bring against my nation.19"But when the Jews objected, I was forced to appeal to Caesar, not that I had any accusation against my nation.19But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.19Because the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar; it was not as though I had any accusation against my nation.
20For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain."20For this reason, therefore, I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I am wearing this chain.”20"For this reason, therefore, I requested to see you and to speak with you, for I am wearing this chain for the sake of the hope of Israel."20For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.20For this reason I've asked to see you and speak to you. In fact, it is for the hope of Israel that I'm wearing this chain."

21They replied, "We have not received any letters from Judea concerning you, and none of our people who have come from there has reported or said anything bad about you.21And they said to him, “We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none of the brothers coming here has reported or spoken any evil about you.21They said to him, "We have neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brethren come here and reported or spoken anything bad about you.21And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.21Then they said to him, "We haven't received any letters about you from Judea. None of the brothers has come and reported or spoken anything evil about you.
22But we want to hear what your views are, for we know that people everywhere are talking against this sect."22But we desire to hear from you what your views are, for with regard to this sect we know that everywhere it is spoken against.”22"But we desire to hear from you what your views are; for concerning this sect, it is known to us that it is spoken against everywhere."22But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.22But we would like to hear from you what you think. For concerning this sect, we are aware that it is spoken against everywhere."
23They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. He witnessed to them from morning till evening, explaining about the kingdom of God, and from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets he tried to persuade them about Jesus.23When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.23When they had set a day for Paul, they came to him at his lodging in large numbers; and he was explaining to them by solemnly testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning until evening.23And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.23After arranging a day with him, many came to him at his lodging. From dawn to dusk he expounded and witnessed about the kingdom of God. He tried to persuade them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets.
24Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.24And some were convinced by what he said, but others disbelieved.24Some were being persuaded by the things spoken, but others would not believe.24And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.24Some were persuaded by what he said, but others did not believe.
25They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: "The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said through Isaiah the prophet:25And disagreeing among themselves, they departed after Paul had made one statement: “The Holy Spirit was right in saying to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:25And when they did not agree with one another, they began leaving after Paul had spoken one parting word, "The Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers,25And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,25Disagreeing among themselves, they began to leave after Paul made one statement: "The Holy Spirit correctly spoke through the prophet Isaiah to your ancestors

26"'Go to this people and say, "You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving."26“‘Go to this people, and say, “You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.”26saying, 'GO TO THIS PEOPLE AND SAY, "YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; AND YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE;26Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:26when He said, Go to these people and say: You will listen and listen, yet never understand; and you will look and look, yet never perceive.
27For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.'27For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’27FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL, AND WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES; OTHERWISE THEY MIGHT SEE WITH THEIR EYES, AND HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM."'27For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.27For the hearts of these people have grown callous, their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and be converted, and I would heal them.
28"Therefore I want you to know that God's salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!"28Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen.”28"Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will also listen."28Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.28Therefore, let it be known to you that this saving work of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen!"
292929When he had spoken these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves.29And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.29After he said these things, the Jews departed, while engaging in a prolonged debate among themselves.
30For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him.30He lived there two whole years at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him,30And he stayed two full years in his own rented quarters and was welcoming all who came to him,30And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,30Then he stayed two whole years in his own rented house. And he welcomed all who visited him,
31He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ--with all boldness and without hindrance!31proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.31preaching the kingdom of God and teaching concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness, unhindered.31Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.31proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with full boldness and without hindrance.
