Violence

In the biblical context, violence is often depicted as a manifestation of human sinfulness and rebellion against God's order. The Bible consistently condemns acts of violence, portraying them as contrary to the character and will of God. From the earliest narratives, violence is shown to disrupt the harmony of creation. In Genesis 6:11-13, the earth is described as being "corrupt before God, and full of violence," prompting God to bring about the flood as a means of judgment and renewal.

The Old Testament law explicitly prohibits violence, emphasizing justice and the sanctity of life. Exodus 20:13 commands, "You shall not murder," underscoring the value God places on human life. The prophets frequently denounce violence, calling for justice and righteousness. In Isaiah 59:6-8, the prophet laments, "Their feet run to evil; they are swift to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; ruin and destruction lie in their wake."

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ embodies the antithesis of violence, teaching love, peace, and forgiveness. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus instructs, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God" (Matthew 5:9). He further commands His followers to "turn the other cheek" (Matthew 5:39), advocating for a radical departure from the cycle of violence and retaliation.

The apostolic writings continue this theme, urging believers to live peaceably with all. Romans 12:17-18 exhorts, "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone" . The early church is called to be a community marked by love and non-violence, reflecting the peace of Christ.

Deceit

Deceit, like violence, is portrayed in Scripture as a fundamental violation of God's truth and order. It is often associated with the devil, who is described as "a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44). Deceit undermines trust and community, leading to division and destruction.

The Old Testament frequently warns against deceitful practices. Proverbs 12:22 states, "Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but those who deal faithfully are His delight" . The psalmists often cry out for deliverance from deceitful people, as in Psalm 120:2, "Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips and a deceitful tongue" .

In the New Testament, Jesus condemns deceit, emphasizing the importance of truthfulness. In Matthew 5:37, He instructs, "Let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For anything more comes from the evil one" . The apostolic letters echo this call to integrity. Ephesians 4:25 urges believers, "Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one another" .

The early church is called to be a community of truth, reflecting the character of God who "does not lie" (Titus 1:2). Deceit is incompatible with the new life in Christ, as believers are to "put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:24).

In summary, both violence and deceit are depicted in the Bible as antithetical to God's nature and His intentions for humanity. They are manifestations of sin that disrupt the peace and truth God desires for His creation. Through Christ, believers are called to reject these behaviors and embody the love, peace, and truth of the Gospel.
