Value of Completeness

The concept of completeness holds significant value within the biblical narrative, reflecting the divine nature and the fulfillment of God's purposes. In Scripture, completeness often signifies perfection, wholeness, and the fulfillment of God's promises and commands.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word "shalom" is frequently associated with completeness, often translated as "peace" but encompassing a broader sense of wholeness and well-being. In Genesis 2:1-2 , the creation account concludes with the completion of the heavens and the earth: "Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work." This passage underscores the divine pattern of work and rest, highlighting the value of completing what has been started.

The Law given to Israel also emphasizes completeness. Deuteronomy 27:26 states, "Cursed is he who does not uphold the words of this law by carrying them out." The expectation is not partial obedience but a complete adherence to God's commands, reflecting His holy and perfect nature.

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the Greek word "teleios" is often used to convey the idea of completeness or perfection. Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, calls His followers to a standard of completeness in love and holiness: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matthew 5:48). This call to perfection is not about flawlessness but about maturity and completeness in character, reflecting God's nature.

The Apostle Paul frequently addresses the theme of completeness in his epistles. In Colossians 2:9-10 , he writes, "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity dwells in bodily form. And you have been made complete in Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority." Here, completeness is found in the believer's union with Christ, who embodies the fullness of God.

Theological Implications

The value of completeness is deeply rooted in the character of God, who is perfect and whole. God's work in creation, redemption, and sanctification reflects His commitment to bringing His purposes to completion. Philippians 1:6 assures believers of this divine commitment: "being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will continue to perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus."

Completeness also relates to the believer's spiritual growth and maturity. Ephesians 4:13 speaks of the goal of attaining "the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ." This maturity is a process of becoming complete in Christ, reflecting His character and fulfilling His purposes.

Practical Application

The value of completeness calls believers to pursue wholeness in their relationship with God and others. It encourages a life of integrity, where one's actions align with God's will and commands. James 1:4 exhorts believers to let perseverance finish its work "so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." This pursuit of completeness involves a commitment to spiritual growth, obedience, and the development of Christ-like character.

In summary, the biblical value of completeness encompasses the perfection and fulfillment of God's purposes, the maturity of the believer, and the integrity of one's life in alignment with God's will. It is a call to reflect the wholeness and holiness of God in every aspect of life.
