The Privilege of Nearness

The concept of "The Privilege of Nearness" in the Bible refers to the profound blessing and honor of being close to God, both spiritually and relationally. This nearness is a recurring theme throughout Scripture, highlighting the intimate relationship God desires with His people and the transformative impact of His presence.

Old Testament Foundations

In the Old Testament, the privilege of nearness is first seen in the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve enjoyed direct fellowship with God (Genesis 3:8). This initial closeness was disrupted by sin, yet God's desire for relationship remained evident. The covenant with Abraham (Genesis 17:7) and the establishment of Israel as a chosen nation (Exodus 19:5-6) further illustrate God's intention to draw His people near.

The tabernacle and later the temple served as physical symbols of God's presence among His people. In Exodus 25:8, God commands, "And they are to make a sanctuary for Me, so that I may dwell among them." The sacrificial system and the role of the high priest, who entered the Holy of Holies once a year (Leviticus 16:2), underscored both the privilege and the limitations of nearness under the Old Covenant.

Psalms and the Desire for God's Presence

The Psalms frequently express a deep longing for God's presence. Psalm 73:28 declares, "But as for me, it is good to draw near to God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may proclaim all Your works." Similarly, Psalm 145:18 affirms, "The LORD is near to all who call on Him, to all who call out to Him in truth." These verses reflect the psalmists' understanding of nearness as both a source of comfort and a call to worship.

Prophetic Promises

The prophets also spoke of a future time when God's presence would be more fully realized. Jeremiah 31:33-34 promises a new covenant where God will write His law on the hearts of His people, and they will all know Him intimately. Ezekiel 37:27 echoes this, stating, "My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be My people."

New Testament Fulfillment

The New Testament reveals the fulfillment of these promises through Jesus Christ. In John 1:14, we read, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us." Jesus' incarnation represents the ultimate expression of God's desire to be near His creation. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus provides a way for believers to draw near to God with confidence. Hebrews 10:19-22 encourages believers, "Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus... let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith."

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in maintaining and deepening this nearness. Jesus promised His disciples in John 14:16-17, "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth." The indwelling of the Holy Spirit ensures that believers are never separated from God's presence, as He guides, comforts, and empowers them.

The Church and Community

The privilege of nearness is also experienced within the community of believers, the Church. Ephesians 2:13-14 states, "But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace." The Church is called to be a living temple, where God's presence dwells collectively among His people (1 Corinthians 3:16).

Eternal Nearness

Finally, the privilege of nearness will reach its ultimate fulfillment in eternity. Revelation 21:3 proclaims, "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.'" This eternal nearness is the culmination of God's redemptive plan, where believers will enjoy unbroken fellowship with Him forever.
