The Ordination Offering, also known as the Consecration Offering, is a significant ritual in the Old Testament, particularly in the context of the Levitical priesthood. This offering is detailed in the book of Exodus and Leviticus, where it is described as part of the process of consecrating Aaron and his sons for their priestly duties.

Biblical Foundation

The primary scriptural basis for the Ordination Offering is found in Exodus 29 and Leviticus 8. In Exodus 29:1-9, God instructs Moses on the specific procedures for consecrating Aaron and his sons. The ordination process includes washing, clothing, anointing, and the presentation of offerings. The offerings consist of a bull for a sin offering, two rams, and unleavened bread, cakes, and wafers.

Leviticus 8 provides a detailed account of the ordination ceremony as it was carried out. Leviticus 8:22-24 states: "Then Moses presented the second ram, the ram of ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. Moses slaughtered the ram, took some of its blood, and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. Moses also presented Aaron’s sons and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet."

Symbolism and Purpose

The Ordination Offering serves multiple purposes. It is a means of sanctification, setting apart Aaron and his sons for the sacred duties of the priesthood. The use of blood in the ceremony symbolizes purification and the seriousness of their role as mediators between God and the people of Israel. The application of blood to the ear, thumb, and toe signifies the dedication of the priest's entire being—his hearing, actions, and walk—to the service of God.

The offering also includes a wave offering, as described in Leviticus 8:27-29 : "He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons and waved them before the LORD as a wave offering. Then Moses took them out of their hands and burned them on the altar with the burnt offering as an ordination offering, a pleasing aroma, an offering made by fire to the LORD."

Theological Significance

The Ordination Offering underscores the holiness required of those who serve in the presence of God. It highlights the necessity of atonement and purification before one can approach God’s holiness. The ritual serves as a foreshadowing of the ultimate High Priest, Jesus Christ, who, through His perfect sacrifice, consecrates believers to be a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9).

Practical Implications

For contemporary believers, the Ordination Offering is a reminder of the call to holiness and service. While the specific rituals are not practiced in the New Covenant, the principles of dedication, purification, and service to God remain relevant. The offering points to the need for spiritual preparation and consecration in the life of every believer, emphasizing the importance of living a life set apart for God’s purposes.
