Reflect on Motives

Reflecting on one's motives is a significant theme throughout the Bible, urging believers to examine the intentions behind their actions and thoughts. This introspection is essential for living a life that aligns with God's will and righteousness.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible frequently addresses the importance of motives, emphasizing that God looks beyond outward actions to the heart's intentions. In 1 Samuel 16:7, the Lord tells Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart." This verse underscores that God evaluates the inner motives rather than external appearances.

Heart and Motives

Proverbs 21:2 states, "All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the LORD weighs the heart." This proverb highlights the human tendency to justify one's actions while reminding believers that God discerns the true motives behind them. Similarly, Jeremiah 17:10 declares, "I, the LORD, search the heart; I test the mind to reward a man according to his way, by what his deeds deserve." This passage reinforces the idea that God examines the heart and mind, rewarding individuals based on their genuine intentions.

New Testament Insights

In the New Testament, Jesus emphasizes the importance of pure motives in His teachings. In Matthew 6:1, He warns, "Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven." Here, Jesus cautions against performing good deeds for the sake of human approval, urging believers to seek God's approval instead.

The Apostle Paul also addresses motives in his letters. In 1 Corinthians 4:5, he writes, "Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God." Paul reminds the Corinthians that God will ultimately reveal and judge the true motives of every individual.

Practical Application

Reflecting on motives requires believers to engage in regular self-examination and prayer, seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance to reveal any hidden or impure intentions. Psalm 139:23-24 serves as a model prayer for this introspection: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting."

By aligning their motives with God's will, believers can ensure that their actions are not only righteous in appearance but also in essence, bringing glory to God and fostering genuine spiritual growth.
