Peacemaking is a central theme in the Bible, reflecting God's desire for harmony among His creation. The concept of peacemaking is deeply rooted in the character of God and is exemplified through the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. In the Scriptures, peacemaking is not merely the absence of conflict but the active pursuit of reconciliation and the restoration of relationships.

Old Testament Foundations

The Old Testament lays the groundwork for understanding peacemaking as an integral part of God's covenant with His people. The Hebrew word "shalom," often translated as "peace," encompasses completeness, welfare, and harmony. In Numbers 6:24-26 , the Aaronic blessing highlights God's desire for peace: "The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace."

The prophets also spoke of a future time of peace brought by the Messiah. Isaiah 9:6 prophesies, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." This messianic vision points to a kingdom characterized by justice and peace.

Jesus Christ: The Ultimate Peacemaker

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ embodies the role of the ultimate peacemaker. His birth was heralded by angels proclaiming peace on earth (Luke 2:14). Throughout His ministry, Jesus taught the importance of peacemaking, as seen in the Beatitudes: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God" (Matthew 5:9). This beatitude underscores the divine approval and identity bestowed upon those who actively pursue peace.

Jesus' sacrificial death on the cross is the pinnacle of His peacemaking mission. Through His atonement, He reconciled humanity to God, breaking down the dividing wall of hostility (Ephesians 2:14-16). Colossians 1:20 further emphasizes this reconciliation: "and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross."

The Role of Believers in Peacemaking

Believers are called to be agents of peace in the world, following the example of Christ. Romans 12:18 exhorts, "If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone." This call to peacemaking involves humility, forgiveness, and a commitment to resolving conflicts in a manner that honors God.

The Apostle Paul further instructs believers in 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 , "All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s trespasses against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation." This ministry of reconciliation is a divine mandate for Christians to actively engage in peacemaking efforts.

Peacemaking in the Church and Society

Within the church, peacemaking is essential for maintaining unity and reflecting the love of Christ. Ephesians 4:3 urges believers to "make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." This unity serves as a powerful testimony to the world of God's transformative power.

In society, Christians are called to be salt and light, promoting peace and justice. James 3:18 states, "Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness." This verse highlights the reciprocal relationship between peacemaking and righteousness, encouraging believers to pursue peace as a means of bearing witness to the gospel.

Conclusion

Peacemaking is a divine calling for all believers, rooted in the character of God and exemplified by Jesus Christ. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Christians are equipped to be ambassadors of peace, fostering reconciliation and harmony in a world marred by conflict and division.
