Paul's nephew, though not named in the Scriptures, plays a crucial role in the narrative of the Apostle Paul's life, particularly in the events surrounding Paul's imprisonment in Jerusalem. The account of Paul's nephew is found in the Book of Acts, specifically in
Acts 23:16-22. This passage provides insight into the providential care and protection that God extended to Paul through his family.
Biblical AccountIn
Acts 23, the Apostle Paul is in Jerusalem, having been arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin. A group of more than forty Jews forms a conspiracy to kill Paul, taking an oath not to eat or drink until they have succeeded in their plot (
Acts 23:12-13). The conspirators plan to ask the Roman commander to bring Paul to the Sanhedrin under the pretense of further questioning, intending to ambush and kill him along the way.
Paul's nephew, described as "the son of Paul's sister," becomes aware of this plot. The Scripture states: "But when the son of Paul’s sister heard about the ambush, he went into the barracks and told Paul" (
Acts 23:16). Demonstrating courage and loyalty, the young man takes the initiative to inform his uncle of the danger he faces.
Paul, recognizing the gravity of the situation, calls one of the centurions and requests that his nephew be taken to the Roman commander, Claudius Lysias, to report the conspiracy. The centurion complies, and the young man is brought before the commander. The nephew relays the details of the plot, warning the commander not to be persuaded by the Jews' request to bring Paul to the council (
Acts 23:17-21).
The Roman commander, taking the warning seriously, dismisses the young man with instructions to keep the information confidential: "The commander dismissed the young man and instructed him, 'Do not tell anyone that you have reported this to me'" (
Acts 23:22). As a result of the nephew's intervention, the commander arranges for Paul to be transferred under heavy guard to Governor Felix in Caesarea, thereby thwarting the assassination attempt.
SignificancePaul's nephew is a testament to the often-overlooked individuals who play pivotal roles in the unfolding of God's plans. His actions demonstrate the importance of family ties and the impact that even seemingly minor characters can have in the biblical narrative. The young man's bravery and quick thinking were instrumental in preserving Paul's life, allowing the Apostle to continue his mission of spreading the Gospel.
This account also highlights the theme of divine providence, as God uses ordinary means and people to accomplish His purposes. The intervention of Paul's nephew serves as a reminder of God's sovereignty and His ability to protect and guide His servants through the challenges they face.
