The identity and mission of Jesus as the Messiah are central themes throughout the Bible, with numerous scriptures affirming His role as the anointed one sent by God. These passages, found in both the Old and New Testaments, provide a comprehensive understanding of His divine mission and fulfillment of prophecy.

Old Testament Prophecies

1. Isaiah 7:14 · "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel." This prophecy foretells the miraculous birth of Jesus, emphasizing His divine nature and mission.

2. Micah 5:2 · "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me one to be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." This passage predicts the birthplace of the Messiah, fulfilled in Jesus' birth in Bethlehem.

3. Isaiah 53:3-5 · "He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. Surely He took on our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken by God, struck down and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed." This passage vividly describes the suffering servant, a role fulfilled by Jesus in His sacrificial death.

4. Psalm 22:16-18 · "For dogs surround me; a band of evil men encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet. I can count all my bones; they stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing." This psalm is a prophetic depiction of the crucifixion, pointing to Jesus' suffering and the events surrounding His death.

New Testament Fulfillment

1. Matthew 1:22-23 · "All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel' (which means, 'God with us')." This passage confirms the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy in the birth of Jesus.

2. John 1:41 · "He first found his brother Simon and told him, 'We have found the Messiah' (which is translated as Christ)." This declaration by Andrew highlights the recognition of Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah.

3. Luke 4:17-21 · "The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it is written: 'The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.' Then He rolled up the scroll, returned it to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him, and He began by saying, 'Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.'" Jesus Himself affirms His messianic mission by declaring the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy.

4. Acts 2:36 · "Therefore let all Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ!" Peter's proclamation on the day of Pentecost underscores the recognition of Jesus as the Messiah and Lord.

5. Hebrews 1:8-9 · "But about the Son He says: 'Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You above Your companions with the oil of joy.'" This passage affirms the divine kingship and anointing of Jesus as the Messiah.

These scriptures collectively affirm Jesus' identity as the Messiah, fulfilling the prophecies and expectations set forth in the Old Testament and realized in the New Testament. His life, death, and resurrection are the culmination of God's redemptive plan for humanity.
