He was the king of Hebron during the time of Joshua's conquest of Canaan. Hoham is noted for his role in the coalition of Amorite kings who opposed the Israelites.Biblical Account Hoham is introduced in Joshua 10:3, where he is listed among the five Amorite kings who formed an alliance to attack Gibeon. The Gibeonites had made a peace treaty with Israel, which incited the wrath of the surrounding Amorite kings. The coalition included Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem; Hoham, king of Hebron; Piram, king of Jarmuth; Japhia, king of Lachish; and Debir, king of Eglon. The biblical narrative describes how these kings gathered their forces to besiege Gibeon. In response, the Gibeonites called upon Joshua and the Israelites for help. Joshua 10:6-7 states: "Then the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: 'Do not abandon your servants. Come quickly and save us! Help us, for all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.' So Joshua and his whole army, including all the mighty warriors, came from Gilgal." Defeat and Execution The account continues with the miraculous intervention of God on behalf of Israel. Joshua 10:10-11 recounts: "And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a great slaughter at Gibeon, chased them along the road to Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah. As they fled before Israel on the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down large hailstones on them from the sky, and more of them died from the hail than were killed by the swords of the Israelites." The five kings, including Hoham, fled and hid in a cave at Makkedah. Joshua ordered the cave to be sealed with large stones and guarded. After the battle, Joshua commanded that the kings be brought out. Joshua 10:24-26 describes their fate: "When they had brought these kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the troops who had gone with him, 'Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.' So they came forward and placed their feet on their necks. 'Do not be afraid or discouraged,' Joshua said. 'Be strong and courageous, for the LORD will do this to all the enemies you fight.' After this, Joshua struck them down and killed them, and he hung their bodies on five trees, where they remained until evening." Historical and Theological Significance Hoham's role in the biblical narrative underscores the theme of divine intervention and the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel. The defeat of the Amorite coalition, including Hoham, is portrayed as a testament to God's power and faithfulness in delivering the land of Canaan into the hands of the Israelites. The account of Hoham and the other Amorite kings serves as a reminder of the consequences of opposing God's chosen people and the ultimate triumph of God's will in biblical history.
