Hatred

Hatred is a profound emotional aversion or hostility towards someone or something. In the Bible, hatred is often depicted as a destructive force that stands in opposition to the love and righteousness that God desires for His people. The Scriptures consistently warn against harboring hatred, as it leads to sin and discord among individuals and communities.

The Old Testament frequently addresses the issue of hatred, particularly in the context of interpersonal relationships. Leviticus 19:17 commands, "You must not harbor hatred against your brother in your heart. Directly rebuke your neighbor, so that you will not incur guilt on account of him." This verse highlights the importance of addressing grievances openly and honestly, rather than allowing hatred to fester.

In the New Testament, Jesus expands on the concept of hatred in His teachings. In the Sermon on the Mount, He equates hatred with murder, emphasizing the severity of harboring such feelings. Matthew 5:21-22 states, "You have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not murder’ and ‘Anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment." Here, Jesus underscores the idea that hatred in the heart is as serious as the physical act of murder.

The Apostle John also addresses the issue of hatred in his epistles. In 1 John 3:15 , he writes, "Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that eternal life does not reside in a murderer." This passage reiterates the gravity of hatred and its incompatibility with the Christian life.

Jealousy

Jealousy, often intertwined with envy, is a feeling of resentment or covetousness towards someone else's achievements, possessions, or qualities. The Bible portrays jealousy as a sinful attitude that can lead to destructive behavior and spiritual downfall.

In the Old Testament, jealousy is frequently mentioned in the context of idolatry and unfaithfulness to God. Exodus 20:5 describes God as a "jealous God," indicating His desire for exclusive devotion from His people. This divine jealousy is righteous and contrasts with human jealousy, which is often rooted in selfishness and insecurity.

The account of Cain and Abel in Genesis 4 illustrates the destructive power of jealousy. Cain's jealousy towards his brother Abel, whose offering was accepted by God, led to the first murder recorded in Scripture. Genesis 4:6-7 recounts God's warning to Cain: "Then the LORD said to Cain, 'Why are you angry, and why has your countenance fallen? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.'"

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul warns against jealousy as a work of the flesh. Galatians 5:19-21 lists jealousy among other sins, stating, "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

James 3:14-16 further elaborates on the dangers of jealousy: "But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice."

Throughout Scripture, both hatred and jealousy are depicted as attitudes that lead individuals away from God's will and disrupt the harmony of relationships. Believers are called to reject these sinful inclinations and instead cultivate love, contentment, and peace in their hearts and communities.
