Consequences of Hesitation

Topical Encyclopedia
Hesitation, in the biblical context, often refers to the failure to act promptly in obedience to God's commands or in response to His guidance. The Scriptures provide several examples where hesitation led to negative consequences, serving as a cautionary tale for believers.

Lot's Wife
One of the most poignant examples of the consequences of hesitation is the account of Lot's wife. In Genesis 19, as God prepared to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, angels urged Lot and his family to flee without looking back. However, Lot's wife hesitated and looked back, resulting in her becoming a pillar of salt. Genesis 19:26 states, "But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt." Her hesitation and longing for the past led to her immediate judgment and serves as a warning against disobedience and attachment to worldly things.

The Israelites in the Wilderness
The Israelites' journey from Egypt to the Promised Land is marked by moments of hesitation and doubt. In Numbers 13-14, when the spies returned from Canaan, the Israelites hesitated to enter the land due to fear of its inhabitants. Their lack of faith and hesitation led to God's judgment, resulting in forty years of wandering in the wilderness. Numbers 14:34 records, "For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have Me against you." This account highlights the severe consequences of hesitating to trust in God's promises.

The Rich Young Ruler
In the New Testament, the account of the rich young ruler illustrates the spiritual consequences of hesitation. In Matthew 19:16-22, the young man approached Jesus, asking how to obtain eternal life. When Jesus instructed him to sell his possessions and follow Him, the young man hesitated and ultimately walked away sorrowful. Matthew 19:22 states, "When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth." His hesitation to fully commit to Christ cost him the opportunity to become a disciple and inherit eternal life.

Peter Walking on Water
Peter's experience walking on water towards Jesus also demonstrates the consequences of hesitation. In Matthew 14:28-31, Peter initially stepped out of the boat in faith, but when he saw the wind, he hesitated and began to sink. Jesus immediately reached out to save him, saying, "You of little faith," He said, "why did you doubt?" (Matthew 14:31). Peter's hesitation, born out of doubt, momentarily disrupted his miraculous experience and serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining faith without wavering.

Procrastination in Spiritual Matters
The Bible warns against procrastination and hesitation in spiritual matters. In James 4:17 , it is written, "Therefore, whoever knows the right thing to do, yet fails to do it, is guilty of sin." Hesitation to act on what is known to be right can lead to sin and missed opportunities for spiritual growth and service. The parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1-13 further emphasizes the importance of readiness and the dangers of hesitation, as the foolish virgins' delay resulted in their exclusion from the wedding feast.

In summary, the Bible consistently portrays hesitation as a hindrance to faith and obedience. The consequences of hesitation can be immediate and severe, affecting one's spiritual journey and relationship with God. Believers are encouraged to act promptly and decisively in response to God's call, trusting in His guidance and promises.
