Topical Encyclopedia
In biblical literature, a "sign from God" refers to a miraculous event or phenomenon that serves as a divine message or confirmation of God's will, presence, or intervention. Signs are often given to individuals or groups to guide, warn, or reassure them of God's promises and purposes. Throughout the Bible, signs are pivotal in demonstrating God's power and authority, often accompanying significant events or revelations.

Old Testament Examples

1. The Rainbow as a Sign to Noah: After the flood, God established a covenant with Noah, promising never to destroy the earth with a flood again. The rainbow served as a sign of this covenant. Genesis 9:13-15 states, "I have set My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember My covenant between Me and you and all living creatures of every kind."

2. The Plagues in Egypt: God used signs and wonders to demonstrate His power to Pharaoh and the Egyptians, ultimately leading to the liberation of the Israelites. Exodus 7:3 says, "But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I will multiply My signs and wonders in the land of Egypt."

3. Gideon's Fleece: Gideon sought confirmation from God regarding his mission to save Israel from the Midianites. He asked for a sign involving a fleece of wool. Judges 6:37 records, "Behold, I will place a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that You will deliver Israel by my hand, as You have said."

New Testament Examples

1. The Virgin Birth: The birth of Jesus Christ was foretold as a sign from God. Isaiah 7:14 prophesies, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel."

2. Miracles of Jesus: Jesus performed numerous signs and miracles to authenticate His divine authority and mission. John 2:11 notes, "Jesus performed this first sign at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him."

3. The Resurrection: The resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate sign of God's power over death and His promise of eternal life. Matthew 12:39-40 records Jesus saying, "A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

Purpose and Interpretation

Signs from God serve multiple purposes, including:

· Confirmation of God's Word: Signs often confirm the truth of God's promises or the authenticity of His messengers.
· Guidance and Direction: They provide guidance to individuals or nations, directing them in accordance with God's will.
· Judgment and Warning: Signs can serve as warnings of impending judgment or calls to repentance.
· Reassurance and Encouragement: They offer reassurance of God's presence and encouragement to remain faithful.

The interpretation of signs requires discernment, as not all miraculous events are from God. Deuteronomy 13:1-3 warns against false prophets who may perform signs to lead people astray, emphasizing the importance of aligning signs with God's revealed truth.
