He died in Moab before entering Canaan, and the Lord buried him there (Deuteronomy 34:5–6). “His servant” honors Moses as God’s faithful covenant leader, prophet, and intercessor. Moses’ death closed a decisive era, yet God’s purposes for Israel did not end with the loss of its human leader. Joshua belonged to the tribe of Ephraim and had stood with Caleb against the unbelief of the other spies, trusting God to give Israel the land (Numbers 13:8; 14:6–9). His name, meaning “The LORD is salvation,” pointed to the God who would save and establish His people. Deu 31:23 Then the LORD commissioned Joshua son of Nun… Moses’ assistant, Joshua had served beside Moses for many years, accompanying him on Sinai, remaining near the tent of meeting, and witnessing God’s dealings with Israel (Exodus 24:13; 33:11). Moses had publicly commissioned him before his death, and the Lord had already promised to be with him (Numbers 27:18–23; Deuteronomy 31:7–8). His years of humble service prepared him to lead Israel in obedience, courage, and dependence upon God. Num 11:28 Joshua son of Nun, the attendant to Moses since youth… saying, God’s words would provide Joshua with the authority, command, and encouragement needed for the conquest of Canaan. The continuity of God’s revelation assured Israel that the covenant Lord remained present and faithful as a new generation entered the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Teaching Points Leadership TransitionGod prepares leaders for His people. Just as Joshua was prepared under Moses, God prepares us for roles He calls us to. Divine Calling Joshua's calling was specific and clear. We should seek God's guidance and confirmation in our own callings and responsibilities. Faithfulness in Service Joshua served faithfully as Moses' assistant before becoming a leader. Faithfulness in small roles prepares us for greater responsibilities. God's Unchanging Purpose Despite the death of Moses, God's plan for Israel continued. God's purposes are not thwarted by human limitations or changes. Courage and Obedience As we see in the following verses, Joshua is called to be strong and courageous. Our obedience to God requires courage, especially in times of transition.
