Now when the people saw that Moses was delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, "Come, make us gods who will go before us. The mountain still testified to God’s holy presence, but the people allowed the lack of visible results to outweigh what God had already revealed. Exo 24:18 Moses entered the cloud as he went up on the mountain… they gathered around Aaron and said, Moses had appointed Aaron and Hur to help settle matters among the people during his absence (Exodus 24:14). The crowd’s approach placed Aaron under intense pressure, but he was responsible to uphold the worship of the Lord rather than yield to the demands of the people. His failure would soon bring grave consequences upon the nation. Num 20:2-5 Now there was no water for the congregation,… “Come, make us gods who will go before us. The Lord had already gone before Israel in the pillar of cloud and fire and had delivered them from Egypt by His power. Israel nevertheless sought a visible object of worship and guidance, returning in heart to the idolatrous patterns they had known in Egypt and seen among surrounding nations. Their request directly rejected the commandments forbidding other gods and carved images. Moses was God’s appointed servant and mediator, but his absence became an occasion for Israel to disregard both his authority and the God who had sent him.
