1And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beer-sheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. 2And God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here am I.” 3And He said, “I am God, the God of your father: do not fear to go down into Egypt; for I will make of you a great nation there: 4I will go down with you into Egypt; and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph shall put his hand upon your eyes.” 5And Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel transported Jacob, their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the carts which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. 6And they took their cattle, and their goods that they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt. 7Jacob brought all his descendants with him: his sons, his sons' sons, his daughters, his sons' daughters, and all his offspring, into Egypt. 8And these are the names of the descendants of Israel, who came into Egypt, (Jacob and his descendants): Reuben, Jacob's firstborn; 9And the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 10And the sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, son of a Canaanite woman. 11And the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 12And the sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 13And the sons of Issachar: Tola, Puvah, Job, and Shimron. 14And the sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. 15These are the sons whom Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, as well as his daughter Dinah; all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty-three. 16And the sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. 17And the sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and Serah, their sister; and the sons of Beriah: Heber, and Malchiel. 18These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah, his daughter, and these she bore to Jacob; sixteen souls. 19The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife: Joseph, and Benjamin. 20And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-phera, the priest of On, bore to him. 21And the sons of Benjamin were Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. 22These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob: totaling fourteen. 23And the son of Dan: Hushim. 24And the sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. 25These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel, his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob: all in all - seven. 26All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, his direct descendants were sixty-six, besides Jacob's sons' wives; 27And the sons of Joseph, who were born him in Egypt, were two: all those of the household of Jacob who came into Egypt, were seventy. 28And he sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph, to get directions to Goshen; and they came into the region of Goshen. 29And Joseph had his chariot ready, and went to Goshen to greet Israel, his father, and presented himself to him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. 30And Israel said to Joseph, “Now I can die, since I have finally seen your face, and know that you are yet alive.” 31And Joseph told his brothers, and his father's household, “I will go and tell Pharaoh, ‘My brothers, and my father's family have come to me from the land of Canaan. 32These men are shepherds by trade, tending cattle; and they have brought their flocks and herds, and all that they have.’ 33And, when Pharaoh calls you in, and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’ 34You should answer, ‘Your servants’ trade has been about cattle from our youth until now, both we, and also our fathers.’ Then he will let you stay in the region of Goshen; for all shepherds are despised by the Egyptians.” Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
