John 5:1-26 ▼

1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2 Now there is in Jerusalem, by the sheep-gate, a pool, which is called, in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.

3 In these were lying a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, withered, [waiting for the moving of the waters:

4 for an angel of the Lord went down at a certain period into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever, therefore, first, after the troubling of the water, stepped in, was healed of whatsoever disease he had].

5 And a certain man was there, who had been for thirty-eight years in his infirmity.

6 Jesus, seeing this man lying, and knowing that already for a long time he had been thus , saith to him, "Do you wish to be made well?"

7 The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no one, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool; but, while I am coming, another goes down before me!"

8 Jesus saith to him, "Rise, take up your bed, and walk."

9 And straightway the man became well, and took up his bed, and was walking. And it was the sabbath on that day.

10 The Jews, therefore, said to him who had been cured, "It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed."

11 But he answered them, "He Who made me well, the Same said to me, 'Take up your bed and walk.'

12 They asked him, "Who is the Man That said to you, 'Take up your bed, and walk?'"

13 And he who was healed knew not Who it was; for Jesus withdrew, a multitude being in the place.

14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple. And He said to him, "Behold, you have been made well; sin no more, lest something worse befall you."

15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who made him well.

16 And, on this account, the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the sabbath.

17 But He answered them, "My Father worketh even until now, and I work."

18 For this cause, therefore, the Jews were seeking the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the sabbath, but also called God His Father, making Himself equal with God.

19 Jesus, therefore, answered and said to them, "Verily, verily, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father doing; for whatsoever things He doeth, these also, in like manner, the Son doeth.

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth Him all things which He Himself doeth; and greater works than these will He show Him, that ye may marvel.

21 For, as the Father raiseth the dead, and maketh them alive; so also the Son maketh alive whom He willeth.

22 For neither doth the Father judge any one, but all judgment He hath given to the Son;

23 that all may honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He that honors not the Son honors not the Father Who sent Him.

24 "Verily, verily, I say to you, He that hears My word, and believes Him Who sent Me, has eternal life, and comes not into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

25 Verily, verily, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those having heard shall live.

26 For, as the Father hath life in Himself, so also He gave to the Son to have life in Himself;
