1 Why are the nations in an uproar, and their people involved in a vain plot? Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?
2 As the kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers conspire together against the LORD and his anointed one, they say, The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying, The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the LORD and against his anointed, saying,
3 |Let us tear off their shackles from us, and cast off their chains.| “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” “Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.”
4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.
5 In his anger he rebukes them, and in his wrath he terrifies them: Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
6 |I have set my king on Zion, my holy mountain.| “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”
7 Let me announce the decree of the LORD that he told me: |You are my son, today I have become your father. I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. I will proclaim the LORD’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father.
8 Ask of me, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the ends of the earth as your possession. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You will break them with an iron rod, you will shatter them like pottery.| You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
10 Therefore, kings, act wisely! Earthly rulers, be warned! Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.
12 Kiss the son before he becomes angry, and you die where you stand. Indeed, his wrath can flare up quickly. How blessed are those who take refuge in him. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
