7 Therefore, he said to the crowd that went out in order to be baptized by him: “You progeny of vipers! Who told you to flee from the approaching wrath? Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
9 For even now the axe has been placed at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not produce good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.” Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 And the crowed was questioning him, saying, “What then should we do?” And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?” “What should we do then?” the crowd asked.
11 But in response, he said to them: “Whoever has two coats, let him give to those who do not have. And whoever has food, let him act similarly.” And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
12 Now the tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 But he said to them, “You should do nothing more than what has been appointed to you.” And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
14 Then the soldiers also questioned him, saying, “And what should we do?” And he said to them: “You should strike no one, and you should not make false accusations. And be content with your pay.” Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.” Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
15 Now all were thinking about John in their hearts, and the people were supposing that perhaps he might be the Christ. As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.
16 John responded by saying to everyone: “Indeed, I baptize you with water. But there will arrive one stronger than me, the laces of whose shoes I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit, and with fire. John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
17 His winnowing fan is in his hand. And he will purify his threshing floor. And he will gather the wheat into the barn. 21 Now it happened that, when all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized; and as he was praying, heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit, in a corporal appearance like a dove, descended upon him. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son.
