1 And the word of YHWH came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying: Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:
2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before My face!” “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 And Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish, away from the face of YHWH. And he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish, and he paid its fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, away from the face of YHWH. But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
4 And YHWH hurled a great wind toward the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, and the ship was thinking to be broken apart. But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.
5 And the sailors were afraid, and each man cried out to his god. And they threw the articles that were in the ship into the sea to lighten it from them. And Jonah had gone down into the recesses of the ship, and he had lain down and was deeply asleep. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
6 And the chief pilot came near to him and said to him: “How can you sleep? Stand up and call to your God! Perhaps your God will have consideration for us and we will not perish!” So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.” The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
7 And they said, each man to his companion, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know by whom this evil is upon us!” And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
8 And they said to him, “Declare now to us, with regard to whom is this evil upon us? What is your occupation, and from where do you come? What is your land, and from which people are you?” Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
9 And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew and YHWH, God of the heavens, I fear, who made the sea and the dry land.” And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10 And the men feared with great fear, and they said to him: “What is this you have done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing away from the face of YHWH, because he had told them. Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)
11 And they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may become quiet around us?” For the sea was going on and raging. Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 And he said to them, “Pick me up and cast me into the sea, and the sea will become quiet around you⁺. For I know that because of me this great tempest is upon you⁺.” He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
13 And the men dug in to return to the land, and they were not able, for the sea was going on and raging against them. Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.
14 And they cried out to YHWH and said: “Ah, O YHWH, please do not let us perish for the soul of this man, and do not put upon us innocent blood. For You, O YHWH, have done as You pleased.” Therefore they called out to the LORD, “O LORD, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you.” Then they cried out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, LORD, have done as you pleased.”
15 And they picked up Jonah, and they cast him into the sea, and the sea stood from its raging. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.
16 And the men feared YHWH with great fear, and they offered a sacrifice to YHWH, and they vowed vows. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows. At this the men greatly feared the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to him.
17 And YHWH appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights. And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
