And the LORD said to Job: | The LORD said to Job: | |
“Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.” | “Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!” | |
Then Job answered the LORD and said: | Then Job answered the LORD: | |
“Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. | “I am unworthy—how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. | |
I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.” | I spoke once, but I have no answer— twice, but I will say no more.” | |
And the Lord yet again answered and spoke to Job out of the cloud, saying , | Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: | Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm: |
Nay, gird up now thy loins like a man; and I will ask thee, and do thou answer me. | “Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. | “Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. |
Do not set aside my judgment: and dost thou think that I have dealt with thee in any other way, than that thou mightest appear to be righteous? | Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right? | “Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself? |
Hast thou an arm like the Lord's? or dost thou thunder with a voice like his? | Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his? | Do you have an arm like God’s, and can your voice thunder like his? |
Assume now a lofty bearing and power; and clothe thyself with glory and honour. | “Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor. | Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty. |
And send forth messengers with wrath; and lay low every haughty one. | Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him. | Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at all who are proud and bring them low, |
Bring down also the proud man; and consume at once the ungodly. | Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand. | look at all who are proud and humble them, crush the wicked where they stand. |
And hide them together in the earth; and fill their faces with shame. | Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below. | Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave. |
Then will I confess that thy right hand can save thee . | Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. | Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you. |
But now look at the wild beasts with thee; they eat grass like oxen. | “Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox. | “Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. |
Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. | Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly. | What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly! |
He sets up his tail like a cypress; and his nerves are wrapped together. | He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. | Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit. |
His sides are sides of brass; and his backbone is as cast iron. | His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron. | Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron. |
This is the chief of the creation of the Lord; made to be played with by his angels. | “He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword! | It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword. |
And when he has gone up to a steep mountain, he causes joy to the quadrupeds in the deep. | For the mountains yield food for him where all the wild beasts play. | The hills bring it their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby. |
He lies under trees of every kind, by the papyrus, and reed, and bulrush. | Under the lotus plants he lies, in the shelter of the reeds and in the marsh. | Under the lotus plants it lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh. |
And the great trees make a shadow over him with their branches, and so do the bushes of the field. | For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him. | The lotuses conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround it. |
If there should be a flood, he will not perceive it; he trust that Jordan will rush up into his mouth. | Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth. | A raging river does not alarm it; it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth. |
Yet one shall take him in his sight; one shall catch him with a cord, and pierce his nose. | Can one take him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a snare? | Can anyone capture it by the eyes, or trap it and pierce its nose? |
