1 And YHWH answers Job and says: And the LORD said to Job: The LORD said to Job:
2 “Is the striver with the Mighty instructed? The reprover of God, let him answer it.” “Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.” “Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!”
3 And Job answers YHWH and says: Then Job answered the LORD and said: Then Job answered the LORD:
4 “Behold, I have been vile, || What do I return to You? I have placed my hand on my mouth. “Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. “I am unworthy—how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth.
5 I have spoken once, and I do not answer, || And twice, and I do not add.” I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.” I spoke once, but I have no answer— twice, but I will say no more.”
6 And YHWH answers Job out of the whirlwind and says: Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm:
7 “Now gird your loins as a man, || I ask you, and you cause Me to know. “Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. “Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.
8 Do you also make My judgment void? Do you condemn Me, || That you may be righteous? Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right? “Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?
9 And do you have an arm like God? And do you thunder with a voice like His? Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his? Do you have an arm like God’s, and can your voice thunder like his?
10 Now put on excellence and loftiness, || Indeed, put on splendor and beauty. “Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor. Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.
11 Scatter abroad the wrath of your anger, || And see every proud one, and make him low. Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him. Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at all who are proud and bring them low,
12 See every proud one—humble him, || And tread down the wicked in their place. Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand. look at all who are proud and humble them, crush the wicked where they stand.
13 Hide them in the dust together, || Bind their faces in secret. Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below. Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave.
14 And even I praise you, || For your right hand gives salvation to you. Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you.
15 Now behold, behemoth, || That I made with you: He eats grass as an ox. “Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox. “Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox.
16 Now behold, his power [is] in his loins, || And his strength in the muscles of his belly. Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly. What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly!
17 He bends his tail as a cedar, || The sinews of his thighs are wrapped together, He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.
18 His bones [are] tubes of bronze, || His bones [are] as a bar of iron. His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron. Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron.
19 He [is] a beginning of the ways of God, || His Maker [alone] brings His sword near; “He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword! It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword.
20 For mountains bear food for him, || And all the beasts of the field play there. For the mountains yield food for him where all the wild beasts play. The hills bring it their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby.
21 He lies down under shades, || In a secret place of reed and marsh. Under the lotus plants he lies, in the shelter of the reeds and in the marsh. Under the lotus plants it lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh.
22 Shades cover him, [with] their shadow, || Willows of the brook cover him. For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him. The lotuses conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround it.
23 Behold, a flood oppresses—he does not hurry, || He is confident though Jordan || Comes forth to his mouth. Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth. A raging river does not alarm it; it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth.
24 Does [one] take him by his eyes? || Does [one] pierce the nose with snares?” Can one take him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a snare? Can anyone capture it by the eyes, or trap it and pierce its nose?
