1 And Jehovah answered Job and said, And the LORD said to Job: The LORD said to Job:
2 Shall he that will contend with the Almighty instruct [him]? he that reproveth +God, let him answer it. “Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.” “Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!”
3 And Job answered Jehovah and said, Then Job answered the LORD and said: Then Job answered the LORD:
4 Behold, I am nought: what shall I answer thee? I will lay my hand upon my mouth. “Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. “I am unworthy—how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth.
5 Once have I spoken, and I will not answer; yea twice, but I will proceed no further. I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.” I spoke once, but I have no answer— twice, but I will say no more.”
6 And Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind and said, Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm:
7 Gird up now thy loins like a man: I will demand of thee, and inform thou me. “Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. “Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.
8 Wilt thou also annul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me that thou mayest be righteous? Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right? “Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?
9 Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him? Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his? Do you have an arm like God’s, and can your voice thunder like his?
10 Deck thyself now with glory and excellency, and clothe thyself with majesty and splendour. “Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor. Then adorn yourself with glory and splendor, and clothe yourself in honor and majesty.
11 Cast abroad the ragings of thine anger, and look on every one that is proud, and abase him: Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him. Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at all who are proud and bring them low,
12 Look on every one that is proud, bring him low, and tread down the wicked in their place: Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand. look at all who are proud and humble them, crush the wicked where they stand.
13 Hide them in the dust together; bind their faces in secret. Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below. Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave.
14 Then will I also praise thee, because thy right hand saveth thee. Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you.
15 See now the behemoth, which I made with thee: he eateth grass as an ox. “Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox. “Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox.
16 Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the muscles of his belly. Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly. What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly!
17 He bendeth his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are woven together. He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. Its tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are close-knit.
18 His bones are tubes of bronze, his members are like bars of iron. His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron. Its bones are tubes of bronze, its limbs like rods of iron.
19 He is the chief of God's ways: he that made him gave him his sword. “He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword! It ranks first among the works of God, yet its Maker can approach it with his sword.
20 For the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play. For the mountains yield food for him where all the wild beasts play. The hills bring it their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby.
21 He lieth under lotus-bushes, in the covert of the reed and fen: Under the lotus plants he lies, in the shelter of the reeds and in the marsh. Under the lotus plants it lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh.
22 Lotus-bushes cover him with their shade; the willows of the brook surround him. For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him. The lotuses conceal it in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround it.
23 Lo, the river overfloweth -- he startleth not: he is confident though a Jordan break forth against his mouth. Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth. A raging river does not alarm it; it is secure, though the Jordan should surge against its mouth.
24 Shall he be taken in front? will they pierce through [his] nose in the trap? Can one take him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a snare? Can anyone capture it by the eyes, or trap it and pierce its nose?
