And they came near—all the captains of the forces, and Johanan son of Kareah, and Jezaniah and son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, from the least even to the greatest, | Then all the commanders of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, came near | Then all the army officers, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest approached |
and they said to Jeremiah the prophet: “Please, let our supplication fall before your face, and pray for us to YHWH your God, on behalf of all this remnant—since we have left remaining a few of the many, as your eyes can see with us— | and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Let our plea for mercy come before you, and pray to the LORD your God for us, for all this remnant—because we are left with but a few, as your eyes see us— | Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, “Please hear our petition and pray to the LORD your God for this entire remnant. For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few are left. |
that YHWH your God may present to us the way in which we should walk in it, and the thing that we should do. | that the LORD your God may show us the way we should go, and the thing that we should do.” | Pray that the LORD your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.” |
And Jeremiah the prophet said to them: “I have heard;” behold, I will pray to YHWH your⁺ God according to your⁺ words; and it will come to pass that every word that YHWH answers you⁺, I will declare to you⁺—I will not withhold from you⁺ a word. | Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Behold, I will pray to the LORD your God according to your request, and whatever the LORD answers you I will tell you. I will keep nothing back from you.” | “I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will certainly pray to the LORD your God as you have requested; I will tell you everything the LORD says and will keep nothing back from you.” |
And they said to Jeremiah: “May YHWH be against us as a true and faithful witness, if according to every word that YHWH your God sends you to us, we do not thus. | Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act according to all the word with which the LORD your God sends you to us. | Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the LORD your God sends you to tell us. |
Whether good or whether bad, to the voice of YHWH our God, to whom we are sending you, we will listen, so that it may be good for us when we listen to the voice of YHWH our God. | Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God to whom we are sending you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.” | Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, we will obey the LORD our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us, for we will obey the LORD our God.” |
And it came to pass after ten days that the word of YHWH came to Jeremiah. | At the end of ten days the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah. | Ten days later the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah. |
And he called to Johanan son of Kareah, and to all the captains of the forces that were with him, and to all the people, from the least even to the greatest, | Then he summoned Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces who were with him, and all the people from the least to the greatest, | So he called together Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him and all the people from the least to the greatest. |
and said to them: “Thus says YHWH the God of Israel to Him to whom you⁺ sent me to cause your⁺ supplication to fall before His face: | and said to them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your plea for mercy before him: | He said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition, says: |
‘If, turning back, you⁺ will dwell in this land, then I will build you⁺ up and not pull you down, and I will plant you⁺ and not pluck you up; for I will relent concerning the disaster that I have done to you⁺. | If you will remain in this land, then I will build you up and not pull you down; I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I relent of the disaster that I did to you. | If you stay in this land, I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you, for I have relented concerning the disaster I have inflicted on you. |
You⁺ shall not be afraid before the face of the king of Babylon, whom you⁺ are afraid of him. Do not be afraid of him, a declaration of YHWH, for I am with you⁺ to save you⁺ and to deliver you⁺ from his hand! | Do not fear the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid. Do not fear him, declares the LORD, for I am with you, to save you and to deliver you from his hand. | Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear. Do not be afraid of him, declares the LORD, for I am with you and will save you and deliver you from his hands. |
And I will give to you⁺ compassion, that he may have compassion on you⁺ and return you⁺ to your⁺ own land.’ | I will grant you mercy, that he may have mercy on you and let you remain in your own land. | I will show you compassion so that he will have compassion on you and restore you to your land.’ |
And if you⁺ are saying ‘We do not dwell in this land, so as not to listen to the voice of YHWH your⁺ God, | But if you say, ‘We will not remain in this land,’ disobeying the voice of the LORD your God | “However, if you say, ‘We will not stay in this land,’ and so disobey the LORD your God, |
saying, ‘No, but we will go to the land of Egypt, where we will not see war, and the voice of the shofar will we not hear, and we will not be hungry for bread, and there we will dwell,’ | and saying, ‘No, we will go to the land of Egypt, where we shall not see war or hear the sound of the trumpet or be hungry for bread, and we will dwell there,’ | and if you say, ‘No, we will go and live in Egypt, where we will not see war or hear the trumpet or be hungry for bread,’ |
then now thus will you hear the word of YHWH, O remnant of Judah! Thus says YHWH of Hosts, the God of Israel: ‘If you⁺ really set your⁺ faces to go to Egypt, and to go to dwell there, | then hear the word of the LORD, O remnant of Judah. Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: If you set your faces to enter Egypt and go to live there, | then hear the word of the LORD, you remnant of Judah. This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you are determined to go to Egypt and you do go to settle there, |
then it will come to pass that the sword that you⁺ were afraid of it, will overtake you⁺ there in the land of Egypt, and the famine of which you⁺ were afraid, will follow close after you⁺ there in Egypt, and there you⁺ will die! | then the sword that you fear shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine of which you are afraid shall follow close after you to Egypt, and there you shall die. | then the sword you fear will overtake you there, and the famine you dread will follow you into Egypt, and there you will die. |
And will it come to pass with all the men who set their faces to go to Egypt to dwell there, that they will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, and will there be of them no survivor or escapee from the disaster that I am bringing upon them!’ | All the men who set their faces to go to Egypt to live there shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. They shall have no remnant or survivor from the disaster that I will bring upon them. | Indeed, all who are determined to go to Egypt to settle there will die by the sword, famine and plague; not one of them will survive or escape the disaster I will bring on them.’ |
For thus says YHWH of Hosts, the God of Israel: ‘As My anger and My fury were poured out on those dwelling in Jerusalem, so My fury will be poured out on you⁺ in your⁺ coming to Egypt. And you⁺ will become as an object of cursing, and as a horror, and as a curse, and a reproach; and you⁺ will not see this place again. | “For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: As my anger and my wrath were poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You shall become an execration, a horror, a curse, and a taunt. You shall see this place no more. | This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘As my anger and wrath have been poured out on those who lived in Jerusalem, so will my wrath be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You will be a curse and an object of horror, a curse and an object of reproach; you will never see this place again.’ |
YHWH has said concerning you⁺, O remnant of Judah: ‘Do not go to Egypt!’ Know you⁺ for sure that I have given a warning to you⁺ this day | The LORD has said to you, O remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’ Know for a certainty that I have warned you this day | “Remnant of Judah, the LORD has told you, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’ Be sure of this: I warn you today |
that you⁺ have gone astray in your⁺ souls, when you⁺ sent me to YHWH your⁺ God, saying, ‘Pray on our behalf to YHWH our God, and according to all that YHWH our God says, so declare it to us, and we will do it! | that you have gone astray at the cost of your lives. For you sent me to the LORD your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to the LORD our God, and whatever the LORD our God says, declare to us and we will do it.’ | that you made a fatal mistake when you sent me to the LORD your God and said, ‘Pray to the LORD our God for us; tell us everything he says and we will do it.’ |
And I have declared it to you⁺ this day, and you⁺ have not listened to the voice of YHWH your⁺ God, and in all that He has sent me to you⁺. | And I have this day declared it to you, but you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in anything that he sent me to tell you. | I have told you today, but you still have not obeyed the LORD your God in all he sent me to tell you. |
And now, know you⁺ for sure that by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence you⁺ will die in the place where you⁺ delight to go to dwell there. | Now therefore know for a certainty that you shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desire to go to live.” | So now, be sure of this: You will die by the sword, famine and plague in the place where you want to go to settle.” |
