1 The word that came to Jeremiah from YHWH after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guards has sent him away from Ramah, when he had taken him—and he being bound in chains—in the midst of all the exile of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon. The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD after Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he took him bound in chains along with all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah who were being exiled to Babylon. The word came to Jeremiah from the LORD after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon.
2 And the captain of the guards took Jeremiah and said to him, “YHWH your God has spoken this evil against this place, The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, “The LORD your God pronounced this disaster against this place. When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, “The LORD your God decreed this disaster for this place.
3 and YHWH has brought it, and He has done as He said. Because you⁺ have sinned against YHWH and have not listened to His voice, so this thing has come upon you⁺. The LORD has brought it about, and has done as he said. Because you sinned against the LORD and did not obey his voice, this thing has come upon you. And now the LORD has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned against the LORD and did not obey him.
4 And now, behold, I have loosed you this day from the chains that were on your hand. If it is good in your eyes to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will put the eye to you. And if it is bad in your eyes to come with me to Babylon, remain here. Behold, all the land is before you; wherever it is good and upright for you to go, go there. Now, behold, I release you today from the chains on your hands. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you well, but if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, do not come. See, the whole land is before you; go wherever you think it good and right to go. But today I am freeing you from the chains on your wrists. Come with me to Babylon, if you like, and I will look after you; but if you do not want to, then don’t come. Look, the whole country lies before you; go wherever you please.”
5 And while he had not turned again: “And You may return to Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and you may dwell with him in the midst of the people or go to wherever is upright for you to go.” And the captain of the guards gave rations to him, and a present, and he sent him away. If you remain, then return to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon appointed governor of the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people. Or go wherever you think it right to go.” So the captain of the guard gave him an allowance of food and a present, and let him go. However, before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the towns of Judah, and live with him among the people, or go anywhere else you please.” Then the commander gave him provisions and a present and let him go.
6 And Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, to Mizpah, and he dwelt with him in the midst of the people remaining in the land. Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, at Mizpah, and lived with him among the people who were left in the land. So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.
7 And all the captains of the forces who were in the fields heard—they and their men—that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam in the land, and he had appointed to him men, and women, and children, and the poorest of the land, who had not been exiled to Babylon; When all the captains of the forces in the open country and their men heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land and had committed to him men, women, and children, those of the poorest of the land who had not been taken into exile to Babylon, When all the army officers and their men who were still in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor over the land and had put him in charge of the men, women and children who were the poorest in the land and who had not been carried into exile to Babylon,
8 and they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah—even Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maachathite—they and their men. they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, Johanan the son of Kareah, Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men. they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of the Maakathite, and their men.
9 And Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan took an oath before them and before their men, saying: “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans; dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you⁺. Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. “Do not be afraid to serve the Babylonians,” he said. “Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you.
10 And I, behold, I will be dwelling at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans who will come to us; and you⁺, gather wine and summer fruit and oil, and put them in your⁺ vessels, and dwell in your⁺ cities that you⁺ have taken. As for me, I will dwell at Mizpah, to represent you before the Chaldeans who will come to us. But as for you, gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and store them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.” I myself will stay at Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine, summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars, and live in the towns you have taken over.”
11 And also all the Jews who were in Moab and among the sons of Ammon and in Edom, who were in all the lands, heard that the king of Babylon had given a remnant for Judah and that he had appointed over them Gedaliah son of Ahikam son Shaphan. Likewise, when all the Judeans who were in Moab and among the Ammonites and in Edom and in other lands heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, as governor over them, When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom and all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them,
12 And all the Jews from all of the places to which they had been driven there returned, and they came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and they gathered wine and summer fruit in great abundance. then all the Judeans returned from all the places to which they had been driven and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah. And they gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance. they all came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, from all the countries where they had been scattered. And they harvested an abundance of wine and summer fruit.
13 And Johanan son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were in the fields, came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, Now Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers still in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah
14 and they said to him: “Do you know for certain that Baalis the king of the sons of the Ammon has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to strike your soul?” And Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not trust them. and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them. and said to him, “Don’t you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.
15 And Johanan son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in secret in Mizpah, saying: “Let me go, please, and I will strike Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and not a man will know.” Why should he strike you, so that all Judah who are gathered to you should be scattered and the remnant of Judah should perish? Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah at Mizpah, “Please let me go and strike down Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life, so that all the Judeans who are gathered about you would be scattered, and the remnant of Judah would perish?” Then Johanan son of Kareah said privately to Gedaliah in Mizpah, “Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life and cause all the Jews who are gathered around you to be scattered and the remnant of Judah to perish?”
16 And Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah: “You will not do this thing, for you speak falsely concerning Ishmael. But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you are speaking falsely of Ishmael.” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, “Don’t do such a thing! What you are saying about Ishmael is not true.”
