1 THE just perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart, and men of mercy are taken away, because there is none that understandeth; for the just man is taken away from before the face of evil. The righteous man perishes, and no one lays it to heart; devout men are taken away, while no one understands. For the righteous man is taken away from calamity; The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil.
2 Let peace come, let him rest in his bed that hath walked in his uprightness. he enters into peace; they rest in their beds who walk in their uprightness. Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death.
3 But draw near hither, you sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer, and of the harlot. But you, draw near, sons of the sorceress, offspring of the adulterer and the loose woman. “But you—come here, you children of a sorceress, you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes!
4 Upon whom have you jested? upon whom have you opened your mouth wide, and put out your tongue? are not you wicked children, a false seed, Whom are you mocking? Against whom do you open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue? Are you not children of transgression, the offspring of deceit, Who are you mocking? At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue? Are you not a brood of rebels, the offspring of liars?
5 Who seek your comfort in idols under every green tree, sacrificing children in the torrents, under the high rocks? you who burn with lust among the oaks, under every green tree, who slaughter your children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks? You burn with lust among the oaks and under every spreading tree; you sacrifice your children in the ravines and under the overhanging crags.
6 In the parts of the torrent is thy portion, this is thy lot: and thou hast poured out libations to them, thou hast offered sacrifice. Shall I not be angry at these things? Among the smooth stones of the valley is your portion; they, they, are your lot; to them you have poured out a drink offering, you have brought a grain offering. Shall I relent for these things? The idols among the smooth stones of the ravines are your portion; indeed, they are your lot. Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings and offered grain offerings. In view of all this, should I relent?
7 Upon a high and lofty mountain thou hast laid thy bed, and hast gone up thither to offer victims. On a high and lofty mountain you have set your bed, and there you went up to offer sacrifice. You have made your bed on a high and lofty hill; there you went up to offer your sacrifices.
8 And behind the door, and behind the post thou best set up thy remembrance: for thou hast discovered thyself near me, and hast received an adulterer: thou hast enlarged thy bed, and made a covenant with them: thou hast loved their bed with open hand. Behind the door and the doorpost you have set up your memorial; for, deserting me, you have uncovered your bed, you have gone up to it, you have made it wide; and you have made a covenant for yourself with them, you have loved their bed, you have looked on nakedness. Behind your doors and your doorposts you have put your pagan symbols. Forsaking me, you uncovered your bed, you climbed into it and opened it wide; you made a pact with those whose beds you love, and you looked with lust on their naked bodies.
9 And thou hast adorned thyself for the king with ointment, and hast multiplied thy perfumes. Thou hast sent thy messengers far off, and wast debased even to hell. You journeyed to the king with oil and multiplied your perfumes; you sent your envoys far off, and sent down even to Sheol. You went to Molek with olive oil and increased your perfumes. You sent your ambassadors far away; you descended to the very realm of the dead!
10 Thou hast been wearied in the multitude of thy ways: yet thou saidst not: I will rest: thou hast found life of thy hand, therefore thou hast not asked. You were wearied with the length of your way, but you did not say, “It is hopeless”; you found new life for your strength, and so you were not faint. You wearied yourself by such going about, but you would not say, ‘It is hopeless.’ You found renewal of your strength, and so you did not faint.
11 For whom hast thou been solicitous and afraid, that thou hast lied, and hast not been mindful of me, nor thought on me in thy heart? for I am silent, and as one that seeth not, and thou hast forgotten me. Whom did you dread and fear, so that you lied, and did not remember me, did not lay it to heart? Have I not held my peace, even for a long time, and you do not fear me? “Whom have you so dreaded and feared that you have not been true to me, and have neither remembered me nor taken this to heart? Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear me?
12 I will declare thy justice, and thy works shall not profit thee. I will declare your righteousness and your deeds, but they will not profit you. I will expose your righteousness and your works, and they will not benefit you.
13 When thou shalt cry, let thy companies deliver thee, but the wind shall carry them all off, a breeze shall take them away, but he that putteth his trust in me, shall inherit the land, and shall possess my holy mount. When you cry out, let your collection of idols deliver you! The wind will carry them all off, a breath will take them away. But he who takes refuge in me shall possess the land and shall inherit my holy mountain. When you cry out for help, let your collection of idols save you! The wind will carry all of them off, a mere breath will blow them away. But whoever takes refuge in me will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain.”
14 And I will say: Make a way: give free passage, turn out of the path, take away the stumblingblocks out of the way of my people. And it shall be said, “Build up, build up, prepare the way, remove every obstruction from my people’s way.” And it will be said: “Build up, build up, prepare the road! Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.”
15 For thus saith the High and the Eminent that inhabiteth eternity: and his name is Holy, who dwelleth in the high and holy place, and with a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite. For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. For this is what the high and exalted One says— he who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.
16 For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be angry unto the end: because the spirit shall go forth from my face, end breathings I will make. For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry; for the spirit would grow faint before me, and the breath of life that I made. I will not accuse them forever, nor will I always be angry, for then they would faint away because of me— the very people I have created.
17 For the iniquity of his covetousness I was angry, and I struck him: I hid my face from thee, and was angry: and he went away wandering in his own heart. Because of the iniquity of his unjust gain I was angry, I struck him; I hid my face and was angry, but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart. I was enraged by their sinful greed; I punished them, and hid my face in anger, yet they kept on in their willful ways.
18 I saw his ways, and I healed him, and brought him back, and restored comforts to him, and to them that mourn for him. I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners, I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will guide them and restore comfort to Israel’s mourners,
19 I created the fruit of the lips, peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, said the Lord, and I healed him. creating the fruit of the lips. Peace, peace, to the far and to the near,” says the LORD, “and I will heal him. creating praise on their lips. Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the LORD. “And I will heal them.”
20 But the wicked are like the raging sea, which cannot rest, and the waves thereof cast up dirt and mire. But the wicked are like the tossing sea; for it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up mire and dirt. But the wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud.
21 There is no peace to the wicked, saith the Lord God. There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.” “There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”
