1 So Israel (he wrestles with God) set out with all that he had, and when he came to (well of seven) Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God {Elohe} of his father Isaac (he laughs). So Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. So Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.
2 And that night God {Elohim} spoke to Israel (he wrestles with God) in a vision: “Jacob, Jacob (he grasps the heel)!” He said. “Here I am,” replied Jacob. And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.” And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, “Jacob! Jacob!” “Here I am,” he replied.
3 “I am God, He said, “the God {Elohe} of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt (land of bondage), for I will make you into a great nation there. Then he said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. “I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.
4 I will go down with you to Egypt (land of bondage), and I will surely bring you back. And Joseph’s (YHWH has added) own hands will close your eyes.” I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again, and Joseph’s hand shall close your eyes.” I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.”
5 Then Jacob (he grasps the heel) departed from (well of seven) Beersheba, and the sons of Israel (he wrestles with God) took their father Jacob in the wagons Pharaoh (great house) had sent to carry him, along with their children and wives. Then Jacob set out from Beersheba. The sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons that Pharaoh had sent to carry him. Then Jacob left Beersheba, and Israel’s sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts that Pharaoh had sent to transport him.
6 They also took the livestock and possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan (lowland), and Jacob (he grasps the heel) and all his offspring went to Egypt (land of bondage). They also took their livestock and their goods, which they had gained in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob and all his offspring with him, So Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt, taking with them their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in Canaan.

8 Now these are the names of the sons of Israel (he wrestles with God) (Jacob (he grasps the heel) and his descendants) who went to Egypt (land of bondage): Reuben (behold a son), Jacob’s firstborn. Now these are the names of the descendants of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons. 15 These are the sons of Leah (weary) born to Jacob (he grasps the heel) in (field) Paddan-aram (northwest Mesopotamia), in addition to his daughter Dinah (judgment). The total number of sons and daughters was thirty-three. These are the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, together with his daughter Dinah; altogether his sons and his daughters numbered thirty-three. 17 The children of Asher (happy): Imnah (right hand), Ishvah (he will resemble), Ishvi (he resembles me), Beriah (with a friend), and their sister Serah (the prince breathed). These were the children born to Jacob by Zilpah, whom Laban had given to his daughter Leah—sixteen in all.
19 The sons of Jacob’s (he grasps the heel) wife Rachel (little lamb): Joseph (YHWH has added) and Benjamin (son of the right hand). The sons of Rachel, Jacob’s wife: Joseph and Benjamin. The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
20 Manasseh (causing to forget) and Ephraim (doubly fruitful) were born to Joseph (YHWH has added) in the land of Egypt (land of bondage) by Asenath (belonging to the goddess Neith) daughter of Potiphera (he whom the Ra gave), priest of On (Heliopolis). And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera the priest of On, bore to him. In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.
21 The sons of Benjamin (son of the right hand): Bela (destruction), Becher (young camel), Ashbel (fire of Bel), Gera (a grain), Naaman (pleasantness), Ehi (my brother), Rosh (head), Muppim (serpent), Huppim (protected), and Ard (I shall subdue). And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.
22 These are the sons of Rachel (little lamb) born to Jacob (he grasps the heel)—fourteen in all. These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob—fourteen persons in all. These were the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob—fourteen in all.
23 The son of Dan (He has judged): Hushim (who makes haste). The son of Dan: Hushim. The son of Dan: Hushim.
24 The sons of Naphtali (wrestling): Jahzeel (God divides), Guni, Jezer (forming), and Shillem (repaid). The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. The sons of Naphtali: Jahziel, Guni, Jezer and Shillem.
25 These are the sons of Jacob (he grasps the heel) born to Bilhah (troubled), whom Laban (white) gave to his daughter Rachel (little lamb)—seven in all. These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and these she bore to Jacob—seven persons in all. These were the sons born to Jacob by Bilhah, whom Laban had given to his daughter Rachel—seven in all.
26 All those belonging to Jacob (he grasps the heel) who came to Egypt (land of bondage)—his direct descendants, besides the wives of Jacob’s sons—numbered sixty-six persons. All the persons belonging to Jacob who came into Egypt, who were his own descendants, not including Jacob’s sons’ wives, were sixty-six persons in all. All those who went to Egypt with Jacob—those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons’ wives—numbered sixty-six persons.
27 And with the two sons [the nine sons] who had been born to Joseph (YHWH has added) in Egypt (land of bondage), the members of Jacob’s (he grasps the heel) family who went to Egypt were seventy [seventy-five] in all. And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two. All the persons of the house of Jacob who came into Egypt were seventy. With the two sons who had been born to Joseph in Egypt, the members of Jacob’s family, which went to Egypt, were seventy in all.
28 Now Jacob had sent Judah (praised) ahead of him to Joseph (YHWH has added) to get directions to Goshen (drawing near). When Jacob’s family arrived in the land of Goshen, He had sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to show the way before him in Goshen, and they came into the land of Goshen. Now Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to get directions to Goshen. When they arrived in the region of Goshen,
29 Joseph (YHWH has added) prepared his chariot and went there (drawing near) to meet his father Israel (he wrestles with God). Joseph presented himself to him, embraced him, and wept profusely. Then Joseph prepared his chariot and went up to meet Israel his father in Goshen. He presented himself to him and fell on his neck and wept on his neck a good while. Joseph had his chariot made ready and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as Joseph appeared before him, he threw his arms around his father and wept for a long time.
30 Then Israel (he wrestles with God) said to Joseph (YHWH has added), “Finally I can die, now that I have seen your face and know that you are still alive!” Israel said to Joseph, “Now let me die, since I have seen your face and know that you are still alive.” Israel said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”
31 Joseph (YHWH has added) said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and inform Pharaoh (great house): ‘My brothers and my father’s household from the land of Canaan (lowland) have come to me. Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and tell Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were living in the land of Canaan, have come to me.
32 The men are shepherds; they raise livestock, and they have brought their flocks and herds and all that they own.’ And the men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of livestock, and they have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.’ The men are shepherds; they tend livestock, and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.’
33 When Pharaoh (great house) summons you⁺ and asks, ‘What is your⁺ occupation?’ When Pharaoh calls you and says, ‘What is your occupation?’ When Pharaoh calls you in and asks, ‘What is your occupation?’
34 you⁺ are to say, ‘Your servants have raised livestock ever since our youth—both we and our fathers.’ Then you⁺ will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen (drawing near), since all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians (double straits).” you shall say, ‘Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,’ in order that you may dwell in the land of Goshen, for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.” you should answer, ‘Your servants have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the region of Goshen, for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians.”
