1 And Isaac calls to Jacob, and blesses him, and commands him, and says to him, “You must not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan; Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women. So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. Then he commanded him: “Do not marry a Canaanite woman.
2 rise, go to Padan-Aram, to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel, and take for yourself a wife from there, from the daughters of your mother’s brother Laban; Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother. Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother’s father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.
3 and God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and you have become an assembly of peoples; God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples. May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples.
4 and He gives to you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your seed with you, to cause you to possess the land of your sojournings, which God gave to Abraham.” May he give the blessing of Abraham to you and to your offspring with you, that you may take possession of the land of your sojournings that God gave to Abraham!” May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now reside as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.”
5 And Isaac sends Jacob away, and he goes to Padan-Aram, to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, brother of Rebekah, mother of Jacob and Esau. Thus Isaac sent Jacob away. And he went to Paddan-aram, to Laban, the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother. Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.
6 And Esau sees that Isaac has blessed Jacob, and has sent him to Padan-Aram to take to himself from there a wife—in his blessing him that he lays a charge on him, saying, You must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan— Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women,” Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite woman,”
7 that Jacob listens to his father and to his mother, and goes to Padan-Aram— and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and gone to Paddan-aram. and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram.
8 and Esau sees that the daughters of Canaan are evil in the eyes of his father Isaac, So when Esau saw that the Canaanite women did not please Isaac his father, Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac;
9 and Esau goes to Ishmael, and takes Mahalath, daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, sister of Nebajoth, to his wives, to himself, for a wife. Esau went to Ishmael and took as his wife, besides the wives he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth. so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.
10 And Jacob goes out from Beer-Sheba, and goes toward Haran, Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran.
11 and he touches at a [certain] place, and lodges there, for the sun has gone in, and he takes of the stones of the place, and makes [them] his pillows, and lies down in that place. And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
12 And he dreams, and behold, a ladder set up on the earth, and its head is touching the heavens; and behold, messengers of God are going up and coming down by it; And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
13 and behold, YHWH is standing on it, and He says, “I [am] YHWH, God of your father Abraham, and God of Isaac; the land on which you are lying, to you I give it, and to your seed; And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. There above it stood the LORD, and he said: “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.
14 and your seed has been as the dust of the land, and you have broken forth westward, and eastward, and northward, and southward, and all families of the ground have been blessed in you and in your seed. Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.
15 And behold, I [am] with you, and have kept you wherever you go, and have caused you to return to this ground; for I do not leave you until I have surely done that which I have spoken to you.” Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
16 And Jacob awakens out of his sleep and says, “Surely YHWH is in this place, and I did not know”; Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.” When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”
17 and he fears and says, “How fearful [is] this place; this is nothing but a house of God, and this a gate of the heavens.” And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
18 And Jacob rises early in the morning, and takes the stone which he has made his pillows, and makes it a standing pillar, and pours oil on its top, So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it.
19 and he calls the name of that place Bethel, [house of God,] and yet, Luz [is] the name of the city at the first. He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first. He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.
20 And Jacob vows a vow, saying, “Seeing God is with me, and has kept me in this way which I am going, and has given to me bread to eat, and a garment to put on— Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear
21 when I have turned back in peace to the house of my father, and YHWH has become my God, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God, so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the LORD will be my God
22 then this stone which I have made a standing pillar is a house of God, and all that You give to me—tithing I tithe to You.” and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.” and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”
