1 “The Levitical priests, the entire tribe of Levi, shall own [privately] no portion [of land] or inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the LORD’S offerings by fire and His portion. “The Levitical priests, all the tribe of Levi, shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel. They shall eat the LORD’s food offerings as their inheritance. The Levitical priests—indeed, the whole tribe of Levi—are to have no allotment or inheritance with Israel. They shall live on the food offerings presented to the LORD, for that is their inheritance.
2 They shall have no inheritance [of land] among their countrymen (brothers, brethren); the LORD is their inheritance, as He promised them. They shall have no inheritance among their brothers; the LORD is their inheritance, as he promised them. They shall have no inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the LORD is their inheritance, as he promised them.
3 “Now this shall be the priests’ portion from the people, from those offering a sacrifice, either an ox or a sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder and the two cheeks and the stomach. And this shall be the priests’ due from the people, from those offering a sacrifice, whether an ox or a sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder and the two cheeks and the stomach. This is the share due the priests from the people who sacrifice a bull or a sheep: the shoulder, the internal organs and the meat from the head.
4 You shall also give him the first fruits of your grain, your new wine [the first of the season], and your [olive] oil, and the first sheared fleece of your sheep. The firstfruits of your grain, of your wine and of your oil, and the first fleece of your sheep, you shall give him. You are to give them the firstfruits of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the first wool from the shearing of your sheep,
5 For the LORD your God has chosen him, him and his sons from all your tribes, to stand and serve in the name of the LORD forever. For the LORD your God has chosen him out of all your tribes to stand and minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for all time. for the LORD your God has chosen them and their descendants out of all your tribes to stand and minister in the LORD’s name always.
6 “Now if a Levite comes from any of your cities throughout Israel where he resides, and comes whenever he wishes to [the sanctuary] the place which the LORD chooses; “And if a Levite comes from any of your towns out of all Israel, where he lives—and he may come when he desires—to the place that the LORD will choose, If a Levite moves from one of your towns anywhere in Israel where he is living, and comes in all earnestness to the place the LORD will choose,
7 then he shall serve in the name of the LORD his God, like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD. and ministers in the name of the LORD his God, like all his fellow Levites who stand to minister there before the LORD, he may minister in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who serve there in the presence of the LORD.
8 They shall have equal portions to eat, except what they receive from the sale of their fathers’ estates. then he may have equal portions to eat, besides what he receives from the sale of his patrimony. He is to share equally in their benefits, even though he has received money from the sale of family possessions.
9 “When you enter the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable (repulsive) practices of those nations. “When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.
10 There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire [as a sacrifice], one who uses divination and fortune-telling, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,
11 or one who casts a charm or spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or a necromancer [who seeks the dead]. or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.
12 For everyone who does these things is utterly repulsive to the LORD; and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God is driving them out before you. for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD. And because of these abominations the LORD your God is driving them out before you. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD; because of these same detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.
13 You shall be blameless (complete, perfect) before the LORD your God. You shall be blameless before the LORD your God, You must be blameless before the LORD your God.
14 For these nations which you shall dispossess listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners and fortune-tellers, but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so. for these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to fortune-tellers and to diviners. But as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do this. The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so.
15 “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me [Moses] from among you, from your countrymen (brothers, brethren). You shall listen to him. “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.
16 This is according to all that you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb (Mount Sinai) on the day of the assembly, saying, ‘Let me not hear the voice of the LORD my God again, nor see this great fire anymore, so that I will not die.’ just as you desired of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”
17 The LORD said to me, ‘They have spoken well. And the LORD said to me, ‘They are right in what they have spoken. The LORD said to me: “What they say is good.
18 I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him.
19 It shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him [and there will be consequences]. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him. I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name.
20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods—that prophet shall die.’ But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’ But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.”
21 If you say in your heart, ‘How will we know and recognize the word which the LORD has not spoken?’ And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the LORD has not spoken?’— You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?”
22 When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD and the thing does not happen or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him. when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him. If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.
