And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they <i>said</i> to him, “On the contrary, we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit.” and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 “Into what, then, were you baptized? Paul asked. “ The baptism of John, they replied. And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied.
4 Paul explained: “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the One coming after him, that is, in Jesus. And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”
5 On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the people, he withdrew from them and took the disciples away <i>with him,</i> and had discussions daily in the school of Tyrannus. But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
10 This continued for two years, so that everyone who lived in the province of Asia, Jews and Greeks alike, heard the word of the Lord. Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims.” Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. But also some of the Jewish exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to use the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had the evil spirits, saying, “I order you in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches!” Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.”
14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 20 So the word of the Lord powerfully continued to spread and prevail. So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed. 21 After these things had happened, Paul resolved in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem after he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there, he said, “ I must see Rome as well. Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.” After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome. Now after these things were finished, Paul resolved in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem after he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.” After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”
22 He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed for a time in the province of Asia. And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while. So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all. And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods. Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands: You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made by hands are not gods <i>at all.</i> And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.
27 There is danger not only that our business will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited and her majesty deposed— she who is worshiped by all the province of Asia and the whole world. And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.” So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. Not only is there danger that this trade of ours will fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be regarded as worthless, and that she whom all of Asia and the world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence.” There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”
28 When the men heard this, they were enraged and began shouting, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians! When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” And when they heard <i>these sayings</i>, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great <i>is</i> Diana of the Ephesians. When they heard <i>this</i> and were filled with rage, they <i>began</i> shouting, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
29 Soon the whole city was in disarray. They rushed together into the theatre, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia. And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring <i>him</i> that he would not adventure himself into the theatre. Also some of the Asiarchs who were friends of his sent <i>word</i> to him and <i>repeatedly</i> urged him not to venture into the theater. Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.
32 Meanwhile the assembly was in turmoil. Some were shouting one thing and some another, and most of them did not even know why they were there. Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together. So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know for what reason they had come together. The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.
33 The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander forward to explain himself, and he motioned for silence so he could make his defense to the people. Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd. And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people. Some of the crowd concluded <i>it was</i> Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having motioned with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the assembly. 34 But when they realized that he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians! But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great <i>is</i> Diana of the Ephesians. But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35 Finally the city clerk quieted the crowd and declared, “Men of Ephesus, doesn’t everyone know that the city of Ephesus is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven? And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky? And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, <i>Ye</i> men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the <i>image</i> which fell down from Jupiter? After quieting the crowd, the town clerk said, “Men of Ephesus, what person is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of the <i>image</i> which fell down from the sky? The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: “Fellow Ephesians, doesn’t all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?
36 Since these things are undeniable, you ought to be calm and not do anything rash. Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash. Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly. So, since these are undeniable <i>facts,</i> you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash. Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to calm down and not do anything rash.
37 For you have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed our temple nor blasphemed our goddess. For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess. For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess. For you have brought these men <i>here who are</i> neither temple robbers nor blasphemers of our goddess. You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess.
38 So if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open and proconsuls are available. Let them bring charges against one another there. If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another. Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another. So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are in session and proconsuls are <i>available;</i> have them bring charges against one another. If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges.
39 But if you are seeking anything beyond this, it must be settled in a legal assembly. But if you seek anything further, it shall be settled in the regular assembly. But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly. But if you want anything beyond this, it shall be settled in the lawful assembly. If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly.
40 For we are in jeopardy of being charged with rioting for today’s events, and we have no justification to account for this commotion. For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.” For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse. For indeed, we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today’s <i>events,</i> since there is no <i>real</i> reason <i>for it,</i> and in this connection we will be unable to account for this disorderly gathering.” As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of what happened today. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it.”
