1 And the apostles and the brethren who were in Judaea heard that the nations also had received the word of God; Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.
2 and when Peter went up to Jerusalem, they of the circumcision contended with him, So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying, So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him
3 saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised and hast eaten with them. “You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.” and said, “You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.”
4 But Peter began and set forth [the matter] to them in order, saying, But Peter began and explained it to them in order: Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story:
5 I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in an ecstasy I saw a vision, a certain vessel descending like a great sheet, let down by four corners out of heaven, and it came even to me: “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, something like a great sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me. “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was.
6 on which having fixed mine eyes, I considered, and saw the quadrupeds of the earth, and the wild beasts, and the creeping things, and the fowls of the heaven. Looking at it closely, I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles and birds.
7 And I heard also a voice saying to me, Rise up, Peter, slay and eat. And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ Then I heard a voice telling me, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’
8 And I said, In no wise, Lord, for common or unclean has never entered into my mouth. But I said, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ “I replied, ‘Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’
9 And a voice answered the second time out of heaven, What God has cleansed, do not thou make common. But the voice answered a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, do not call common.’ “The voice spoke from heaven a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’
10 And this took place thrice, and again all was drawn up into heaven; This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven. This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again.
11 and lo, immediately three men were at the house in which I was, sent to me from Caesarea. And behold, at that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea. “Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying.
12 And the Spirit said to me to go with them, nothing doubting. And there went with me these six brethren also, and we entered into the house of the man, And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house.
13 and he related to us how he had seen the angel in his house, standing and saying [to him], Send [men] to Joppa and fetch Simon, who is surnamed Peter, And he told us how he had seen the angel stand in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter; He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter.
14 who shall speak words to thee whereby thou shalt be saved, thou and all thy house. he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’ He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.’
15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them even as upon us also at the beginning. As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning.
16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John baptised with water, but ye shall be baptised with [the] Holy Spirit. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
17 If then God has given them the same gift as also to us when we had believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who indeed was I to be able to forbid God? If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”
18 And when they heard these things they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then indeed God has to the nations also granted repentance to life. When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.” When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.”
19 They then who had been scattered abroad through the tribulation that took place on the occasion of Stephen, passed through [the country] to Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one but to Jews alone. Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews.
20 But there were certain of them, Cyprians and Cyrenians, who entering into Antioch spoke to the Greeks also, announcing the glad tidings of the Lord Jesus. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists also, preaching the Lord Jesus. Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.
21 And [the] Lord's hand was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.
22 And the report concerning them reached the ears of the assembly which was in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go through as far as Antioch: The report of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.
23 who, having arrived and seeing the grace of God, rejoiced, and exhorted all with purpose of heart to abide with the Lord; When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.
24 for he was a good man and full of [the] Holy Spirit and of faith; and a large crowd [of people] were added to the Lord. for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.
25 And he went away to Tarsus to seek out Saul. So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul,
26 And having found [him], he brought him to Antioch. And so it was with them that for a whole year they were gathered together in the assembly and taught a large crowd: and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians. and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.
27 Now in these days prophets went down from Jerusalem to Antioch; Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.
28 and one from among them, by name Agabus, rose up and signified by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine over all the inhabited earth, which also came to pass under Claudius. And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this took place in the days of Claudius). One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)
29 And they determined, according as any one of the disciples was well off, each of them to send to the brethren who dwelt in Judaea, to minister [to them]; So the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea. The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea.
30 which also they did, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul. And they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul. This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.
