1 Now the apostles and the believers who were throughout Judea heard [with astonishment] that the Gentiles also had received and accepted the word of God [the message concerning salvation through Christ]. Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision [certain Jewish believers who followed the Law] took issue with him [for violating Jewish customs], So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying, So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him
3 saying, “You went to uncircumcised men and [even] ate with them!” “You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.” and said, “You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.”
4 But Peter began [at the beginning] and explained [the events] to them step by step, saying, But Peter began and explained it to them in order: Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story:
5 “I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision of an object coming down from heaven, like a huge sheet being lowered by the four corners; and [it descended until] it came right down to me, “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, something like a great sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me. “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. 6 and looking closely at it, I saw all kinds of the four-footed animals of the earth and the wild beasts and the crawling creatures and the birds of the air [both clean and unclean according to the Law], Looking at it closely, I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles and birds.
7 and I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat.’ And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ Then I heard a voice telling me, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’
8 But I said, ‘Not at all, Lord; for nothing common (unholy) or [ceremonially] unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ But I said, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ “I replied, ‘Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’
9 But the voice from heaven answered a second time, ‘What God has cleansed and pronounced clean, no longer consider common (unholy).’ But the voice answered a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, do not call common.’ “The voice spoke from heaven a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’
10 This happened three times, and everything was drawn up again into heaven. This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven. This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again.
11 And right then the three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea arrived at the house where we were staying. And behold, at that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea. “Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying.
12 The Spirit told me to go with them without the slightest hesitation. So these six brothers also went with me and we went to the man’s house. And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house.
13 And Cornelius told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house, saying, ‘Send word to Joppa and have Simon, who is also called Peter, brought here; And he told us how he had seen the angel stand in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter; He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter.
14 he will bring a message to you by which you will be saved [and granted eternal life], you and all your household.’ he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’ He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.’
15 When I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as He did on us at the beginning [at Pentecost]. As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning.
16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
17 So, if God gave Gentiles the same gift [equally] as He gave us after we accepted and believed and trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ [as Savior], who was I to interfere or stand in God’s way?” If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”
18 When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified and praised God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance that leads to eternal life [that is, real life after earthly death].” When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.” When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.”
19 So then [since they were unaware of these developments] those who were scattered because of the persecution that occurred in connection with [the stoning of] Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, without telling the message [of salvation through Christ] to anyone except Jews. Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews.
20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who came to Antioch and began speaking to the Greeks as well, proclaiming [to them] the good news about the Lord Jesus. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists also, preaching the Lord Jesus. Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.
21 And the hand (the power and presence) of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord [for salvation, accepting and drawing near to Jesus as Messiah and Savior]. And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.
22 The news of this reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. The report of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.
23 When he arrived and saw the grace of God [that was bestowed on them], he rejoiced and began to encourage them all with an unwavering heart to stay true and devoted to the Lord. When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.
24 For Barnabas was a good man [privately and publicly—his godly character benefited both himself and others] and he was full of the Holy Spirit and full of faith [in Jesus the Messiah, through whom believers have everlasting life]. And a great number of people were brought to the Lord. for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.
25 And Barnabas left for Tarsus to search for Saul; So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul,
26 and when he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. For an entire year they met [with others] in the church and instructed large numbers; and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians. and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians. and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

28 One of them named Agabus stood up and prophesied through the [Holy] Spirit that a severe famine would come on the entire world. And this did happen during the reign of Claudius. And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this took place in the days of Claudius). One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.)
29 So the disciples decided to send a contribution, each according to his individual ability, to the believers who lived in Judea. So the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea. The disciples, as each one was able, decided to provide help for the brothers and sisters living in Judea.
30 And this they did, sending the contribution to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. And they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul. This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.
