וַיָּרִ֖יעוּ אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיְהִ֗י בְּהָרִ֙יעַ֙ אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה וְהָאֱלֹהִ֗ים נָגַ֤ף אֶת־ יָֽרָבְעָם֙ וְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לִפְנֵ֥י אֲבִיָּ֖ה וִיהוּדָֽה׃ | Then the men of Judah raised the battle shout. And when the men of Judah shouted, God defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. | and the men of Judah raised the battle cry. At the sound of their battle cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. |
וַיָּנ֥וּסוּ בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִפְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּתְּנֵ֥ם אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּיָדָֽם׃ | The men of Israel fled before Judah, and God gave them into their hand. | The Israelites fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hands. |
וַיַּכּ֥וּ בָהֶ֛ם אֲבִיָּ֥ה וְעַמּ֖וֹ מַכָּ֣ה רַבָּ֑ה וַיִּפְּל֤וּ חֲלָלִים֙ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֔ל חֲמֵשׁ־ מֵא֥וֹת אֶ֖לֶף אִ֥ישׁ בָּחֽוּר׃ | Abijah and his people struck them with great force, so there fell slain of Israel 500,000 chosen men. | Abijah and his troops inflicted heavy losses on them, so that there were five hundred thousand casualties among Israel’s able men. |
וַיִּכָּנְע֥וּ בְנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֑יא וַיֶּֽאֶמְצוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה כִּ֣י נִשְׁעֲנ֔וּ עַל־ יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ | Thus the men of Israel were subdued at that time, and the men of Judah prevailed, because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers. | The Israelites were subdued on that occasion, and the people of Judah were victorious because they relied on the LORD, the God of their ancestors. |
וַיִּרְדֹּ֣ף אֲבִיָּה֮ אַחֲרֵ֣י יָרָבְעָם֒ וַיִּלְכֹּ֤ד מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ עָרִ֔ים אֶת־ בֵּֽית־ אֵל֙ וְאֶת־ בְּנוֹתֶ֔יהָ וְאֶת־ יְשָׁנָ֖ה וְאֶת־ בְּנוֹתֶ֑יהָ וְאֶת־ [עפרון] (עֶפְרַ֖יִן) וּבְנֹתֶֽיהָ׃ | And Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took cities from him, Bethel with its villages and Jeshanah with its villages and Ephron with its villages. | Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took from him the towns of Bethel, Jeshanah and Ephron, with their surrounding villages. |
וְלֹֽא־ עָצַ֧ר כֹּֽחַ־ יָרָבְעָ֛ם ע֖וֹד בִּימֵ֣י אֲבִיָּ֑הוּ וַיִּגְּפֵ֥הוּ יְהוָ֖ה וַיָּמֹֽת׃ פ | Jeroboam did not recover his power in the days of Abijah. And the LORD struck him down, and he died. | Jeroboam did not regain power during the time of Abijah. And the LORD struck him down and he died. |
And he took fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. | But Abijah grew in strength. He married fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. |
וְיֶ֙תֶר֙ דִּבְרֵ֣י אֲבִיָּ֔ה וּדְרָכָ֖יו וּדְבָרָ֑יו כְּתוּבִ֕ים בְּמִדְרַ֖שׁ הַנָּבִ֥יא עִדּֽוֹ׃ | The rest of the acts of Abijah, his ways and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo. | The other events of Abijah’s reign, what he did and what he said, are written in the annotations of the prophet Iddo. |
