Samuel told Saul, |The LORD sent me to anoint you king of his people Israel. Now listen to the LORD's words. And Samuel said to Saul, “The LORD sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the LORD. Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the LORD sent to anoint you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the LORD.
This is what the LORD of Armies says: I will punish Amalek for what they did to Israel. They blocked Israel's way after the Israelites came from Egypt. Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘I have noted what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt. This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt.
Now go and attack Amalek. Claim everything they have for God by destroying it. Don't spare them, but kill men and women, infants and children, cows and sheep, camels and donkeys.| Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’” Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”
Saul organized the troops, and he counted them at Telaim: 200,000 foot soldiers and 10,000 men from Judah. So Saul summoned the people and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand men on foot, and ten thousand men of Judah. So Saul summoned the men and mustered them at Telaim—two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand from Judah.
Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the valley. And Saul came to the city of Amalek and lay in wait in the valley. Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine.
Then Saul said to the Kenites, |Get away from the Amalekites so that I won't destroy you with them. You were kind to all the Israelites when they came from Egypt.| So the Kenites left the Amalekites. Then Saul said to the Kenites, “Go, depart; go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. Then he said to the Kenites, “Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.
Saul attacked the Amalekites from Havilah to Shur, east of Egypt. And Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt. Then Saul attacked the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to Shur, near the eastern border of Egypt.
He captured King Agag of Amalek alive. But he claimed all the people for God by destroying them. And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword. He took Agag king of the Amalekites alive, and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword.
Saul and the army spared Agag and the best sheep and cows, the fattened animals, the lambs, and all the best [property]. The army refused to claim them for God by destroying them. But everything that was worthless and weak the army did claim for God and destroy. But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction. But Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves and lambs—everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.
Then the LORD spoke to Samuel: The word of the LORD came to Samuel: Then the word of the LORD came to Samuel:
|I regret that I made Saul king. He turned away from me and did not carry out my instructions.| Samuel was angry, and he prayed to the LORD all night. “I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and has not performed my commandments.” And Samuel was angry, and he cried to the LORD all night. “I regret that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions.” Samuel was angry, and he cried out to the LORD all that night.
Early in the morning he got up to meet Saul. Samuel was told, |Saul went to Carmel to set up a monument in his honor. Then he left there and went to Gilgal.| And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning. And it was told Samuel, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself and turned and passed on and went down to Gilgal.” Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal.”
Samuel came to Saul, who said, |The LORD bless you. I carried out the LORD's instructions.| And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “Blessed be you to the LORD. I have performed the commandment of the LORD.” When Samuel reached him, Saul said, “The LORD bless you! I have carried out the LORD’s instructions.”
However, Samuel asked, |But what is this sound of sheep in my ears and this sound of cows that I hear?| And Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the oxen that I hear?” But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?”
Saul answered, |The army brought them from the Amalekites. They spared the best sheep and cows to sacrifice to the LORD your God. But the rest they claimed for God and destroyed.| Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites, for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the LORD your God, and the rest we have devoted to destruction.” Saul answered, “The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the LORD your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.”
|Be quiet,| Samuel told Saul, |and let me tell you what the LORD told me last night.| |Speak,| Saul replied. Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! I will tell you what the LORD said to me this night.” And he said to him, “Speak.” “Enough!” Samuel said to Saul. “Let me tell you what the LORD said to me last night.” “Tell me,” Saul replied.
Samuel said, |Even though you don't consider yourself great, you were the head of Israel's tribes. The LORD anointed you king of Israel. And Samuel said, “Though you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel. Samuel said, “Although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel.
And the LORD sent you on a mission. He said, 'Claim those sinners, the Amalekites, for me by destroying them. Wage war against them until they're wiped out.' And the LORD sent you on a mission and said, ‘Go, devote to destruction the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’ And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’
Why didn't you obey the LORD? Why have you taken their belongings and done what the LORD considers evil?| Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you pounce on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the LORD?” Why did you not obey the LORD? Why did you pounce on the plunder and do evil in the eyes of the LORD?”
|But I did obey the LORD,| Saul told Samuel. |I went where the LORD sent me, brought [back] King Agag of Amalek, and claimed the Amalekites for God. And Saul said to Samuel, “I have obeyed the voice of the LORD. I have gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have devoted the Amalekites to destruction. “But I did obey the LORD,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the LORD assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king.
The army took some of their belongings-the best sheep and cows were claimed for God-in order to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.| But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.” The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal.”
Then Samuel said, |Is the LORD as delighted with burnt offerings and sacrifices as he would be with your obedience? To follow instructions is better than to sacrifice. To obey is better than sacrificing the fat of rams. And Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. But Samuel replied: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
The sin of black magic is rebellion. Wickedness and idolatry are arrogance. Because you rejected the word of the LORD, he rejects you as king.| For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king.” For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.”
Then Saul told Samuel, |I have sinned by not following the LORD's command or your instructions. I was afraid of the people and listened to them. Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice. Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I violated the LORD’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them.
Now please forgive my sin and come back with me so that I may worship the LORD.| Now therefore, please pardon my sin and return with me that I may bow before the LORD.” Now I beg you, forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the LORD.”
Samuel told Saul, |I will not go back with you because you rejected what the LORD told you. So the LORD rejects you as king of Israel.| And Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you. For you have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel.” But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you as king over Israel!”
When Samuel turned to leave, Saul grabbed the hem of his robe, and it tore. As Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore. As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe, and it tore.
Samuel told him, |The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today. He has given it to your neighbor who is better than you. And Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.
In addition, the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind, because he is not a mortal who changes his mind.| And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or have regret, for he is not a man, that he should have regret.” He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”
Saul replied, |I have sinned! Now please honor me in front of the leaders of my people and in front of Israel. Come back with me, and let me worship the LORD your God.| Then he said, “I have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may bow before the LORD your God.” Saul replied, “I have sinned. But please honor me before the elders of my people and before Israel; come back with me, so that I may worship the LORD your God.”
Then Samuel turned and followed Saul, and Saul worshiped the LORD. So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul bowed before the LORD. So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the LORD.
|Bring me King Agag of Amalek,| Samuel said. Agag came to him trembling. |Surely, the bitterness of death is past,| Agag said. Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.” Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.” Agag came to him in chains. And he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
But Samuel said, |As your sword made women childless, so your mother will be made childless among women.| And Samuel cut Agag in pieces in the presence of the LORD at Gilgal. And Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel hacked Agag to pieces before the LORD in Gilgal. But Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so will your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel put Agag to death before the LORD at Gilgal.
Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went to his home at Gibeah. Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul. Then Samuel left for Ramah, but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul.
Samuel didn't see Saul again before he died, though Samuel mourned over Saul. And the LORD regretted that he had made Saul king of Israel. And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the LORD regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel. Until the day Samuel died, he did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned for him. And the LORD regretted that he had made Saul king over Israel.
