1 Christ, then, having suffered for us in [the] flesh, do ye also arm yourselves with the same mind; for he that has suffered in [the] flesh has done with sin, Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.
2 no longer to live the rest of [his] time in [the] flesh to men's lusts, but to God's will. so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.
3 For the time past [is] sufficient [for us] to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, walking in lasciviousness, lusts, wine-drinking, revels, drinkings, and unhallowed idolatries. For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.
4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] to the same sink of corruption, speaking injuriously [of you]; With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.
5 who shall render account to him who is ready to judge [the] living and [the] dead. but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
6 For to this [end] were the glad tidings preached to [the] dead also, that they might be judged, as regards men, after [the] flesh, but live, as regards God, after [the] Spirit. For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does. For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
7 But the end of all things is drawn nigh: be sober therefore, and be watchful unto prayers; The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.
8 but before all things having fervent love among yourselves, because love covers a multitude of sins; Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
9 hospitable one to another, without murmuring; Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
10 each according as he has received a gift, ministering it to one another, as good stewards of [the] various grace of God. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
11 If any one speak -- as oracles of God; if any one minister -- as of strength which God supplies; that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the might for the ages of ages. Amen. whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
12 Beloved, take not [as] strange the fire [of persecution] which has taken place amongst you for [your] trial, as if a strange thing was happening to you; Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
13 but as ye have share in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice, that in the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exultation. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
14 If ye are reproached in [the] name of Christ, blessed [are ye]; for the [Spirit] of glory and the Spirit of God rests upon you: [on their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.] If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
15 Let none of you suffer indeed as murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or as overseer of other people's matters; But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.
16 but if as a christian, let him not be ashamed, but glorify God in this name. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.
17 For the time of having the judgment begin from the house of God [is come]; but if first from us, what [shall be] the end of those who obey not the glad tidings of God? For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
18 And if the righteous is difficultly saved, where shall the impious and [the] sinner appear? And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” And, “If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”
19 Wherefore also let them who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing to a faithful Creator. Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good. So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.
